400W Windcharger

Just wanted to post this for possible future use. Surplus Center's catalog has a 400W Windcharger, new, for $639.99.

-Brand new Air 403 wind Powered Generator. Incorporates many features such as Autobrake which automatically slows the blades when battereis are charged. Aluminum body, brushless permanent magnet alternator and variable pitch carbon fiber blades to provide years of maintenance free service.

-Lightweight frame and small size allow for each roof top or small tower mounting. Simply mount on a 1 7/8" aluminum or steel pipe. Three year warranty.

-Specifications: Output 12 volt DC, 400 watts at 28 mph, start up speed 7 mph, three blade rotor 46" diameter, mount to 1 1/2" (1.9 OD) schedule 40 pipe, 27 1/2" long. Shipping weight 17 pounds.

Looks like a nice unit at a reasonable price. However, note you need to be in a pretty windy area to get maximum performance out of it.

Homepower magazine did a really good comparison / review of wind gennys about a year ago... Very interesting comments on who produces what amount of power at slow speeds. The latest issue has an article on a site in a polar region using a Bergey - sounds like they have 25mph winds most of the time!

Windpower - another project, shuffled around on the burners, between the solar, micro hydro, fences, hoop houses, ponds, etc...
