200 dead cows in Wisconsin

http://www.myfoxtwincities.com/dpp/n...anuary_15_2011

TOWN OF STOCKTON, Wis. - An investigation is under way after 200 dead cows were found in a field in the Town of Stockton, which is located about 10 miles east of Stevens Point.

The Portage County sheriff's office says the owner of the cattle has been working with a local veterinarian and it's believed the
animals died from the IBR/BVD virus.

The virus can cause respiratory and reproductive problems.

WSAW reports samples from the dead cows have been sent to Madison for testing.

Authorities say there is no threat to humans or other animals.

200 head of cattle all died at once?

Must be a pretty fast-acting virus. How often does the farmer check on them?

Oh great! Add that to the massive bird deaths and fish kills. It has to be TEOTWAWKI!

I have a ton of questions myself, none answered by the article. I'm not really buying the vets explanation myself at this point.

something not right. I can see a few deaths and lots of sick ones but not 200 all at the same time.

I wonder if they were getting any commercial feed? I suspect it could be some kind of poisoning, maybe urea?

the virus the vet is attributing it to is a BOVINE species only virus. What the authorities are saying is that it's not a threat to other species. Local dairy herdsmen are panicked, tho.

that said, until the lab tests are done, they won't really know what caused the deaths. and 2, authorities ALWAYS have to quell fears about mass deaths being contagious. so....who knows? We might all be dead by tomorrow. Or not.

I guess the labs are all closed for the weekend, hey?

Has there been any update to this story? what kind of cows, age of them, etc?

A lot of farmers with their hearts in their throats until this gets resolved.

Yeah, I'd be looking at poisoning of some kind, something in feed or water?

The viruses mentioned are pretty common and rarely lead to death, especially an entire herd of adult cattle in a field.

Alot we don't know - type of cattle and operation, feed, etc.

Lots of unanswered questions. Were the cattle calves, yearlings, or grown stock? 200 head dying in a short time period is very unusual. My experience with IBR/BVD is it affects calves and yearlings that have been stressed. Commonly referred to as "shipping fever complex".

Also sounds like the owner was not paying attention to the condition of the cattle in question.

Depends. Urea overdose can wipe them out in a hurry. If they had access to urea and somehow lost access to forage urea can kill quickly.

I heard from a neighbor that the cattle had a nasty Pasturella infection.

Urea? from a protein supplement? Liquid feed? Molasses tubs?

Or nitrate poisoning from fodder treated with anhydrous ammonia?

Not from treated fodder. If it is urea poisoning my guess it would be from liquid supplement or tubs.
