We always gave them 4hrs or more, even a day. If you plug them in before the freeon (sp) has a chance to redistribute, it lowers the lifespan of the appliance.

I'm guessing at least 24 hours. I would think the instruction manual would have something in it about this.

24 hours is what we were told by the local sales/repair guy. We have had to do that a couple times and both are still functioning fine.

we always gave it overnight, but I would bet 24 hours would put any worries to rest.

I've always heard 24 hours. I've done it a few times, no problems.

Back in high school I worked nights and summers delivering appliances and the rule was 30 minutes and you are good to go.

Don't mean to be rude, but someone taught you a very bad rule. It needs 24 hours.

It's not the freon that needs to redistribute. It's the oil in the compressor. It normally pools at the bottom of the compressor when it's not running, and mixes with the freon to lubricate the compressor when it is running. If the appliance is laid on it's side the oil will pool somewhere else, and if it's turned on too soon the compressor will be running with no lubrication.
