"Visiting" Animals - How To Get Rid Of

A few months ago I foolishly allowed a local woman to temporarily keep some rescued animals on my land - 3 steers & 2 donkeys. She runs a non-profit organization.

The arrangement is not working out for me & is causing me great stress. I've told her by email and phone to remove the animals by Jan. 31. I want to follow up with a certified letter & need some help with the wording. I seem to go blank when i start to type.

Any suggestions.

As much as I dislike Lawyers this may be something that is in order just to CYB if you think it could become an issue in the future.

Me, being as subtle as a flying sledgehammer, vote for this.

That happened to me several years ago. I allowed a neighbor's boy friend to leave his horses on my property. He hit her and she threw him out. He started using his horses as an excuse to stalk her.
I just met him face to face and told him to get them off my property.

Go see her and tell her face to face to remove the animals.

Meat is getting expensive. Butcher the steers, or better yet - send her a bill for the cost of your grief...although if your close by I will come by and get the steers off your hand for free.

I would add one thing to Alice's suggested letter. I would add what I "will" do on January 31st if they are not "all" gone. (Make sure that letter is dated, that you send that letter certified and that you keep a copy for yourself.)

Lots of cute answers here to a not so nice problem.

Write what Alice said. Short, sweet and to the point. You are on the right track - send it registered, return receipt requested. You must have a paper trail if this ends up going further. You can do this without an atty, as he'd begin by doing the same for you at a nice fee.

So, what are you going to do if she doesn't remove them by the 31st? Have a committed plan to be put in place ON the morning of the 1st or your letter means nothing.

Call the livestock Board for them to remove the animals? Getting further guidance from them might be a good idea anyway as every state has it's own rules.
Send the steers to freezer camp & give the donkeys away as companion animals?
Move them immediately to a farm far away?
If they are being boarded, you can legally sell them for the feed bill here in AZ.

I hope she wasn't a friend as she probably won't be when this is over. Sorry you're being used & abused.

I understand the donkeys being a rescued animal but why steers? Who in their right mind has those as companion, protection or petting zoo animals - they are food animals. Take them to market and stop wasting time and money on "rescuing" them. Maybe this neighbor has hording issues and doesn't know what to do with all her "rescues" and leaving these with you is enabling her to keep doing her "rescue" thing.

sorry - in a bad mood today and this doesn't make sense to me that livestock need "rescued".

I hope the letter that was drafted here helps you with your situation, make sure you save your correspondences and if you can, print off your emails and save them in case you might need them. Take pictures too - so they can see what you have done for these animals. If she is unable to take the animals back, ask for pasture rent and boarding fees - you deserve compensation if she is to continue to use your good nature and generosity.

I would add, if the animals are not removed I will use whatever means are at my disposal to remove them.

Take time to dig a pit out in the pasture and maybe she'll get the idea she needs to act.

What non-profit does she run? I'd look into them. Have you been feeding these animals at your expense? I'd send the letter with a date you have set up with the butcher included.

That's been done, as well as the emails and phone calls. I've stopped answering her calls begging me not to be so cruel, etc.

The big problem is going to be next week when we get a number of days with very low temperatures. The water will freeze & I cannot possibly chop it up.

i now have a sign on the wall that says "No good deed goes unpunished."

She is providing the hay on an irregular basis. They have chewed down my pasture to nothing & now she wants to move them to the other pasture but there is no pond over there.

I will not allow her assistant on my property which was agreed to before she brought the animals here. He immediately ignored this requirement. He's a drunk, a crook, a thief, a bum, and a smoker who tosses out lit cigarettes. We we have a burn ban in this area. i won't say he is an ass; that would be very insulting to the donkeys

I've only provided the pasture and pond water - no hay or cubes. If they go to the other pasture I'll have to run a very long hose to a 100 gallon container & see that it is filled every day plus chop up any ice that forms. I'll have to deal with hooking up and unhooking the hose/faucet. The animals were supposed to be gone before freezing weather arrived.

I do not go outside when it's very cold or there is any ice. I'm old, cranky , had two hip replacements last year. I have no livestock of my own.
