Need help from Mr. or Mrs. Fixit

In our Toilet tank we have the black barrel type sliding plunger all plastic....I didn't like it when we got it but the salesman said it was a better solution that the old style ball thing....So three years later the thing is not sliding up and the toilet is running, so we have to manually reach in and pull it up to shut off the water....aside from replaceing the thing is there some sort of oil that we can put on the thing to get it sliding smoothly again???

Is it the kind with the white piece connected to the chain inside the black tube? That's what mine is. Offhand though I would say there is probably some type of buildup on the plastic preventing it from moving freely. You can take the piece out and clean it, might buy you some time until it has to be replaced. And it might not work, a little chunk may be broken off inside it.

No oil for inside the toilet.

Is this what you have? I'd say you have sediment or lime buildup and you just need to clean it once in a while. I've used these for years with little or no problems.

I just put 2 of those new slider ones in the tank.. You can get them at Walmart for under 10.00. They are super easy to put in. They even have the instructions on the box.
