I said 5 years or less as we moved here in March but have been working towards Homesteading since we got married in 1983. We did it until 1992. We farmed full time but heath forced me to sell out. We moved into town since we had 2 small children and I didn't know whether I would live or not, wanted everything so Sweetie was taken care of if I didn't. Got well after 2 hard years, got a "town" job and raised the family. Kids gone now so we moved to this propery and a cabin we built for a getaway. Everything is going better than expected. We were ready....James

I said 5 years or less. We bought our 4.5 acres in 2005, but we are a work in progress. I have a garden area done, my horses are in the back yard, I have planted berries, asparagus, etc and we have some chickens, but that is as far as I have gotten. DH is disabled and is very limited as to what he can do so I am trying to do most of it on my own. Plus he isn't the "farmer" type. I have a master plan that I am working towards, but it could take me 20 years to get there.

I am wondering why those of us who choose not to purchase acreage are discriminated against on a consistent basis. Some of us can survive in the world with owning less than an acre of land. It is possible.

Lyra you totally missed an opportunity there. You could have shared some enlightenment and encouragement on how one homesteads even with a miniscule amount of land but instead of knowledge you chose to output sour grapes because your niche was overlooked in the poll.

I have been here on my 1 acre homestead for over 20 years, but this was NOT supposed to be my homestead! Our 5.7 acres out of town were.

But, life happens. This place has become the homestead and the land outside of town has become a place where I try out fun things.

We've been here almost 5 years. We've been adding a little each year. First year was just a garden. Next year we got our chickens and some fruit bushes. The following year we got goats. This past year was rough and I had to get rid of my goats, but just recently got some new ones. We've also added some fruit trees and an herb garden.

Been here almost 7 years now. And like Sonshinewe add a little bit every year. The garden gets bigger every year, added raspberry & blueberry bushes this year. And the chickens are coming in the spring.

We moved to the country in 1979 with a two year old and a four year old. They have children now and come back to see the goats, Gramps, Gran, etc.

I still have SO MUCH to do!

Hey Alice in TX/MO, so did we! 1979. And we get the grandkids every weekend. It's wonderful. And it's better than ever to keep the place going.

We are trying to sell our house, with a contingency on an acreage in Missouri. Once our house sells we'll get started.

I have had my lovely fixer-upper Victorian farmhouse and 4 acres for three years now. I put in a veggie garden there this spring, harvest wild raspberries and pecans, and keep working on the house. But I doubt I'll ever live there - as it turns out my wife prefers to stay in town. I should have checked with her before I pulled the trigger at that auction!

I'm not able to answer the question, either. lol

Both of us have been "homesteading" our entire lives, really. But we just bought land a couple of years ago. We're finally living on it for the last six months.
But to be sure, we didn't start six months ago!

I was born on a farm in 1934 and never moved to town. The farm I was born on was worth about $50 an acre in 1934. The same farm that no longer has buildings or fences is worth 4 to 5 thousand an acre now. The ground hasn't changed to much but the dollar is getting closer to worthless every year.
