Biomass chipper

How do those big chipping operations work?

Do they chip the trees as they go through the woods or are the trees brought to a stationary chipper?

I pictured it like a giant corn picker. Maybe they do that with smaller trees.

There are big ones on tracks which can handle some really big trees. Would like to have seen one in action a few years ago when a highway was widened. Went to work in the morning and many trees standing. Nothing but piles of chips that evening.

Nope.

But, back when the idea of harvesting biofuels was starting out, some folks experimented with planting fast growing poplar trees in rows, and harvesting them with a somewhat modified forage chopper (corn silage chopper). That had to be interesting.
