mystery holes in pasture?

for the past few days we have been seeing a LOT of holes in one of our pastures....they are surrounded by mounded up dirt...the holes themselves are about 1 inch in diameter so not earthworms or night crawlers....some places there are several in a 'row'...about a foot apart....I mean these things are everywhere....so what in the world is doing this? should we be concerned? and what can we do about whatever is doing this? ...this is a field where we are raising chickens in movable pens right now....this round of birds is almost finished and we won't do anymore til spring now...

I at first thought that voles might do this, but there would have to be a skillion of them out there....and if there are, I have never seen even one...just the holes....

is this a problem? or do we just wait til they move somewhere else...???will they damage the field?

Sound like moles to me. They can get pretty bad out here and make it a real pain to mow the lawn.

Gophers, maybe.

Around here, if it's moles, you can usually seen the 'runs'. Their trails are just under the ground will be raised in places and you can see them.

Gopher's runs here are deeper and they just punch dirt up in places. The last hole in the run will have an opening, then they fill that with dirt and you only see a mound of dirt - and they move on.

I don't think they are big enough to be caused by gophers....and there are no little running hills....we used to have moles in NH, and when the snow melted you could see all the little tunnels going everywhere....these are just holes...all over...

Do the holes bottom out or do they keep going?

I haven't poked a finger in them to see....but tomorrow I will get a stick and investigate further...the ones that are in a row seems like they are connected...I have lived here a while and have never seen this before...I was watering the birds today and filled some of them with water....nothing of course happened....I might set a mousetrap near some and see if it catches anything...I am not thinking this is caused by mice, but some small critter...

gwithrow,

Is this pasture in a low lying area that is frequently wet? If so, it is crayfish.

The reason I ask is that skunks often leave these little holes when they dig for grubs.

Gosh, I missed the 1" in diameter.

Now that you mention that, I have seen those at our home in Central Texas. Someone told me it was where Cicada's or locusts came out of the ground. It is a little late for them - at least here, though.

I hope someone comes along who knows -

Sorry about the double post, I don't know how to remove it.

Around these parts, it'd be the work of an armadillo or two.

no, not a wet area at all....the mounded up dirt around the holes looks as if the dirt was pushed up and out as whatever it is dug its way up and out....but they are everywhere...I know I already said that....maybe I can take a couple of pics tomorrow...

are there any trees near by? It could also be termites. We had a few of these in our yard in close proximity to a tree. I asked on here but no one could really identify without a picture and the camera was down at the time. County agent came out since he lives close and said it was a type of termite. He did say they were not the home invader type but when he said the word termite I got really worried and poisoned the little buggers anyway.
