The youth hunt

In the local paper (Harrision Daily times) there was an article about the youth deer hunt and it had pictures of 6 kids the youngest was 6 years old and this was the third hunt she was in. Of the ones pictured were 4 female and 2 male all under 12 years old. It looks like the kids in our area are brought up right.

They don't let kids that young hunt out here, but DD has been hunting with us since the beginning and she's rather impatient to be old enough to do it herself.

Most of the hunters pictured here was using a .223 rifle except the 12 year old and he used a 30-30. I remember the first time I went hunting with my dad it was over 50 years ago.

Grandson, 15, killed a nice 8 point Monday after school. He has killed deer and turkeys with gun. This was the 2nd deer he has shot at with bow and it was 41 yards. Went less than 100 yards. I enjoy him getting his deer a lot more than I would any more. Boy was he excited!!! Not only did he get his deer, he killed it here on the place. Great for the young ones. He is looking for the big one that I posted the picture of the horn from last years shed. If he gets a shot, he most likely will get it. I am taking my 10 year old grandson tomorrow for hunter safety ed. Have taken his sister before. Dad is in the service. Dad will take him hunting, if he gets home! Fun huh?

I love to see stories like those! Thanks for sharing. I'm betting there will be some pics of our local youngsters in the paper this weekend also.

Kansas has a youth season also, but I think the minimum is 8 yrs old. Warden says the thing he watches for is some fathers who do the shooting for the kid. Not exactly what the intention is for a Youth Hunt.

My two youngest daughters (9 and 12) both got them a deer this youth season. One got a small doe and the other got a spike deer. Several days before the season started we went out and practiced shooting. When to hold their breath, when to squeeze the trigger and where to shoot the animal. When my youngest daughter shot her deer she said "Daddy, I done just like you said to do, I held my breath, and as soon as the crosshair lined up behind the shoulder, I squeezed the trigger". Both my daughters took the heart and lungs out on their deer.

I enjoyed watching them catch their first deer about as much as I enjoyed my very first deer.

DS loves deer hunting season almost better then Christmas. This year was the first year he could shoot a deer legally. He got a nice doe and shot the heart right in half! He deer hunts and pheasant hunts with DH. I am so glad they get that bonding time. It is nice that deer hunting isn't all about going to deer camp, getting drunk and doing stupid stuff.
