Prepare a business plan.

The important thing to an investor about the business plan is the "exit strategy". That is, you need to show them how your business will be developed to become attractive to larger companies, and how much you expect to sellout to a larger company for in around 3 years.

I know that this goes against the grain for most small business startup operators, but exit strategy is what attracts investors to small business opportunities.

Investors worth anything, in my experience, are current clients, who see value in you or what you are doing or your work ethic. Other than that, a true outside investor scares me.

I went through most of the process at a U of Arizona community sponsored project for the Tucson area, so I had confidence that I was working with sincere people. I didn't actually go through with the IPO though. That's because I eventually found a wholesale company that allowed me to do what I wanted to do without investment capital.
