Any favorite breeding software for homesteaders?
Just wanting to look into breeding software that goes beyond pedigree, and keeps track of traits , and basic stuff like breeding dates, nesting reminder, gestation tracking, etc. I am sure that there are high tech programs that are used by larger outfits, and i dont need that, just something geared towards the homestead types, kwim?
Does anyone have a favorite software that they use? Would love to hear opinions.
thanks!
PS.. i did google, but thought i'd ask in a forum of people who might have similar needs rather than sort through what could be totally outside of what i'm looking for.

I'm happy I'm not the only one that thought of that. I'm gonna breed me a homesteader.

But, back to the OP's question: I wonder about this, too. Some of the HT'ers are excellent farmers and I also wonder how they track the traits of their breeding livestock.

This is from a small family-operated farm in Central Florida. I have never used the software but it seems they are running a successful small operation, so you might want to look into it. They are very nice people to do business with; I've bought worms from them and am hoping some weekend when Mr. Huzzee and I do a road trip I will be able to go by there and purchase some vegs.

I was tracking on an access database I created, worked real well until the computer crashed. After a year or so doing it manually, I finally broke down and bough Animaltrac. http://animaltrac.com/animaltracbasic.aspx
Not bad. I bought the generic version. I can assign breeds and species and print pre-made reports. With a little database knowledge I can create my own reports, or edit existing reports. It tracks pedigrees, inbreeding %ages, breeding records, milk & weight gains, and another calendar type function I havn't figured out yet. It has a place for stall locations & feed regimines, pictures, and common registry upload features(but not my registry & maybe not my version as I havn't used it). It calculates due dates & give me a due date report. I can print a report of who is due & dates, but not one of who I forgot to breed. I imagine I could create that one just havn't tried to fiddle with it.
It has Invoices, pre-made contracts, costing, vaccinations, buck rental, semen inventory. Not bad for the price, certainly beats manual or excel tracking. Upgrades of modules offer a few more features.
It is very easy to use except that one feature (for me anyways). I'm currently using it for my goats & dogs, but could easily add other species and/or breeds.
I've heard others state the company was very good at responding to questions, however I've had 2 technical questions & have not received a response from them. I've been using it for about 2 months & gave up contacting them. Figured 1 answer out the other is still in limbo.
It was around $125. What I like most is the inbreeding %age, we have a closed herd so that's important to me. Oh, and vaccinations are easy I can add multiple animals with 1 entry rather than individually.

Once again, thank you for all the great replies
homesteader breeding-- lLOL
I was actually thinking of something into which you could plug any species and breed so that i could use it for all the animals, so i will check out the animaltrac. For as functional as it sounds, that doesnt seem to bad of a price.

me too
It's kindof funny, what made me even think in terms of software was my iphone. I was logging the rabbits breeding and logging a nest reminder on the fly, and thought, man, they need an app for this. I looked but didnt find one, so then i thought well, i'll just find a regular program for the puter. I will still be on the lookout for an app for the iphone, and how handy if it could just sync with the computer files. Am i asking too much?? LOL
