Cheap Thermostat Controls

I have some heat lamps, that I want to set up for the cats and the hens.

Since they are 300 watts and can overheat, we'd rather not leave them on all the time, only when the temps get to a certain low.

Anybody seen something like a thermostat that is built into an extension cord, or outlet plug-in adapter? Seen a few, but they are $25 and up.

They can be found for less than $15

Why would the hens need heat lamps?

Maybe to keep the water from freezing?
That's what I use them for

Cold weather makes egg production drop. Also frozen eggs are just a drag to deal with.

The heat lamps just warm the coop a bit.

Even if they slow laying, they still speed up eating, in cold weather.

I had an old line voltage t-stat I used on my brooder lamps because it would get to hot for the chicks. make sure you use a line voltage and not a low voltage--big diference.
