Would You Build?

Ok our House is on a Ridge at one end of our property the rest we use for Hunting and Firewood..

900 feet down the hill is a nice spring, good woods, level spot up where if the spring comes up still be dry.Nice place for a Cabin.

Good points cooler in the Summer, out of the wind in Winter, less likely to burn in wildfire, more isolated mainly hills protecting youe view.

Bad points have to either Drill another Well or run Line down there, have to run New Electric Line, harder to get out in the Winter, not enough sun light for Garden, might mess up Deer hunting because its in the middle of their travel route.

Ok also if we build my wife is wanting to use Oak Logs.I'm thinking save all the Trees we have just put up regular Frame House.

Why would you need a well if there is a spring?

Could it be off grid?

If you cleared some trees to build it out of logs, would you not create a space for a garden?

We just got back from looking it over. There is a place for Garden but it is wet there most the year just damp not swampy.

We considered pumping out of the spring but we would have to watch it as running Pipe up over the spring Bed,plus we're worried about it and our Sewer System where it would come out.

As far as Logs we decided to go with traditional Stick with maybe Log Siding.

As far as Off Grid Electric is so cheap its not cost effective.

All I really know is my wife is excited we've considered and thought about building down there every since we bought the property.

If it has been something you have always wanted to do, then do it!

Find a way around the problems.

I agree, just be sure you think everything through first. But Our Little Farm is right, you only live once!

Well like I told my wife its where we've always wanted to live, build do it right.Like she said use the trail we are using now to get down there, let the trees grow around us no matter where anyone builds on surrounding property we will be out of sight isolated in our world.

I would build and try to make it so in winter i didn't need to leave so much, but I prefer to stay at home all the time anyway.

Out of sight sounds like heaven to me! Wish we were out of sight. Instead we are on a hill and can be seen from three roads! We have one spot outback over a hill where we pretend we are alone! So if you always wanted to build there do it! The other things like a garden and be worked out. My husband built a garden on a rock island Light House station in the Atlantic Ocean once. He had to haul dirt where ever he could scrounge it , make compost but had a garden. Most anything is possible! So go for it while you still can.

Well Rock you know what they say"If momma ain't happy,no one is". Go for it. Enjoy your later years. Maybe you can shoot those deer off your new front porch!Surely you you can get a dozer and make a decent enrty way into it.The more you put in it the more value it has in case something happens to one of you(heaven forbid) and the other decides to sell and move closer to town. Can you rent the place you have now to help with expenses?

With the current economy I wouldn't advise it unless you can work it so you will not incur additional debt.

My wife was asked if she would move out of here if something happen to me,she was crying said she didn't want to leave here.I told her well stand your ground and don't.

We're using an Old logging Road now. We're not really wanting to clear any trees for the rest of the road.

No this place is not Rentable most would say its not Livable.

Being a woman, I can understand it might be more difficult to get back up the hill to the car in order to get out. (I understood you to say your wife had to get out at times.) Thus, if it were me, I would concentrate on the trail! (Make it easy travel with railings!)

Then a small cabin with composting toilet is a great idea! Electricity run to little cabin should not be too difficult and the spring for water! You have it made! (Might consider a green house for vegies & miniature fruits.)
