Elko , Nevada ??

..............I'm always researching small towns I might like to move too , once my job expires in 3 to 5 years ! Elko seems too fit the profile i'm interested in , 25k population job market seems to be strong because of gambling , winters aren't too cold and land is not expensive . Any comments from anyone who has lived in or closeby too Elko ? , thanks , fordy

The Cowboy poets have a big convention or something like that in Elko. Baxter Black used to go to it. Old Baxter is as good as they get.

I lived on the East side of the Rubies, South of Wells, Nevada, in Clover Valley. I'm here to tell you that the growing season is shortened and the winters can be dreadfully cold. Temperatures in early February can be as low as -35 f. There are good gold mines around there and Ely that contributes heavily to the economy. That along with a strong cattle and sheep heritage drives some of the economy.
The schools are majorly funded by the gambling proceeds. The last that I knew there wasn't any State income or sales tax.
To add a little bit of personallity to the post.
When the high school in Wells needed new athletic uniforms and buses (3), the local madam came up with the funds for both.

Elko is remote, up in the NE corner of the state. It's located about half way between Salt Lake City and Reno, along the I-80 corridor.

Yet Elko is big enough to have most everything you need. It's a county seat, so it's got the courthouse, public records, and enough lawyers to make it all happen. Elko has doctors, dentists, and a hospital. You'll find a Walmart Supercenter, Big K-Mart, Home Depot, 5 supermarkets, several banks, and 2 ranch supply stores.

Elko has three main industries; commercial gold mining, cattle ranching, and gambling tourism. The Barrick Goldstrike mine is the largest gold operation in the hemisphere (open pit mining).

Here are some details:

Best pizza -- Pizza Barn
Best Mexican food -- Sergio's
Best Chinese -- Chef Cheng
Largest portions restaurant -- Gold Dust West Casino
Best overall restaurant -- JR's, located at the Gold Country casino/hotel
Least expensive breakfast -- Bandit's, located in the Commercial casino
Buffets -- Three. King Buffet (Chinese), the Brand Room (located in the Commercial casino), and the buffet at the Red lion Inn. Pizza Hut and Round Table Pizza also have lunch buffets.
Least expensive propane refills -- Western States
Propane refill on weekends -- Cimmaron West
Free RV dump -- Shell gas station located on Mountain City Hwy near the Airport (free with gas purchase, $3 without).
College -- Great Basin College
Bulk kerosene pump & farm Diesel -- Al Park Petroleum

I lived there. It is very very cold in the winter and the wind blows so much (all year) that when it stops you notice the quiet. The locals drive like crazy people also. Not a good idea to cross the street even in cross walks with out looking closely. But, it was a nice little town none the less. I am adding this..I lived in Jackpot, and Las Vegas and spent time in Reno. The small towns are the best and offer far more for family life than most places I have been. I will never ever live in Vegas again. The place is a mess. I need small towns I gues..lol!

Yeah, Clover Valley has some elevation that we didn't have in Elko. If it gets to 10 below that's pretty cold for Elko. It happens 2 or 3 times each winter. Last winter Elko had one 20 below night, but it was unusual enough that they're still talking about it. Fortunately I was down in Las Vegas that night.

I still have some connections with Elko. I designed and maintain a website for a local singer & songwriter, as well as the local guitar teacher. Billy & I have been close friends for years.
