You might try Tigerdirect.com. I know they did sell desk tops but I don't know about laptops. Hope this helps. Sam

I purchased a Dell laptop last year off an ebay refurbisher named 199 computerstore and was very happy with the customer service. I believe he also refurbishes other brands as well, but the Dell I purchased met my needs.

There's also an "official" Dell store on e-bay, but don't remember the actual name.

Go the bay and look for the IBM thinkpads. R51-52. or the 40 or 30 series depending on what you want them to do. I have some here that are 10 years old still work and if you have a problem just unscrew it and replace it with another part. And they are under 300.00. generally about 2-250
I'll never buy another new one as long as I can get these. And they have some IBM desk tops that work great in the 120-200 range.

I bought a Thinkpad from Overstock a couple of years ago, it came with a good warranty (the details of which I've totally forgotten) ad was a good price.

I've bought three IBM Thinkpads off ebay in the past. They were used not reconditioned, whatever that means. I've replaced the keypads on one. I carried one around to a construction jobsite. I'd buy another off ebay.

i am interested in a laptop but have no idea what i should look for. i do alot of stuff with photos--saving them, altering them, etc. a huge thing i would like something i could put a photo up and leave it for extended time--actually this would be about #1 reason!
of course using it for email and websurf use too. i looked on ebay and there was a thinkpad for under $200, i never thought i could even consider getting a laptop yet, as i dont' have $1000 saved yet.
having a laptop to take with me on my art trips would be sooo great! or while sitting at games before my own kid plays, *snore!* i would so love a laptop!
could any of you more tech. savvy folk help me? thanks.

Check out New Egg. This site has been around for years and is well known among the guys I know who build their own computers as being a very good place to buy all of their computers and parts from.
Hub buys his computer parts from them for years and I just bought a nice laptop from them...Good prices and they do sell recertified computers. http://www.newegg.com/ Just type "recertified" in their search bar.

The laptop I bought this year from New Egg has 4 gig with a 14 or 15" screen and was under or around 500.00. It is an HP Compaq and I am VERY happy with it. It is super fast and everything loads instantly with zero lag.
It had windows 7 and everything already loaded into it when I bought it. I literally took it out of the box, plugged it in, and it connected right to my wireless signal and I was online immediately - VERY easy.
I was hesitant because I never owned a laptop before and thought it would be a pain figuring out how to set it up and connect.
I now use my laptop 99% of the time instead of my desktop. It is so nice being able to carry it around the house from room to room, take it to work and to hotels...

I have bought two on eBay.com and been quite happy with them. I am typing right now on one. The other I gave to my daughter. It is worth knowing a bit about what you're looking for so read the descriptions carefully.
Cheers

You may want to think about getting sucked into the big screen laptops. they can be a pain if you move around a lot. They get really big and in the way. i have 14 and 15 in and I wouldn't want anything bigger than a 15. And I usually use my 14 the most.
If your gonna do pics and stuff I would think about an external HD. They are cheap and small and protected from falls. And they can be used anywhere.
I gig of Ram has worked fine with me. I always get mine with XP Pro 3 installed with COA. The IBMS come that way. Plus you get the advantage of the built in IBM help system.
Make sure they have built in WIFI or you can install a card. I have a T22 IBM I really like for the net. It takes a card but works well and is really light.

I'm happy with a 15" screen and 2 gig RAM. On the 199 ebay seller I referred you to, if you find a machine you like but with only 1 gig RAM the owner will upgrade for a very reasonable sum since he reconditions all his machines.

This is the site that my husband just got his reconditioned laptop from. Two of his friends work in computers (one builds computers and the other works on computers through a large company) and this is the place that was suggested to him. Good luck!!

If you can wait you might start looking at the Black Friday ads that are now showing up. Should be some deals on new ones there that might compare to used ones now.
Not sure what you want/need a computer for, nor your vision, but Office Max has a small 10" diagonal screen mini computer for $249.
Seems just before school I was seeing beginner laptops for around $349. Expect after Christmas sales to be good as well. Just a matter if you can wait.
Forgot to mention that they also have some refurbished computers listed. Expect those would come with some form of warranty and you might be able to purchase an extended one as well.

My husband has a small company that primarily does websites for medium to large clients. For years we had regular old computers. We hesitated to buy a Mac because they were SO expensive compared to other machines.
Three years ago we made the switch and now we have 5 Macs in our home. We NEVER get viruses and they just plain work. Here's a case where a bit more money is worth it. The service from Apple has been impeccable. We would not hesitate to buy a refurbished Mac. Here's where you might look:
