Shortwave radio?

I just picked up a Grundig G6 from Radio shack, it was on clearance BTW.

I use to listen in on shortwave when I was a kid, but have not had a receiver for any number of years.

I listened to some "interesting" programming out of Nashville yesterday.

What program's do you listed to on shortwave?

When and "where" do you catch them?

I have looked at several of the sites that list station's and programs, but with not knowing what you are looking for I find it a bit overwhelming.

When I got my SW radio, I thought that Voice of Amercia would be something I’d like to listen to. It is after all the OFFICIAL RADIO BROADCASTING SERVICE OF THE US GOVERNMENT. The problem is, I could not find VOA on my tuner.

I did some research and found that there is a federal law that prohibits VOA from broadcasting to the United States! What’s up with that? I pay for the VOA but it cannot be broadcast to the United States. Hummmmm....

According to Wikpedia, under the Smith–Mundt Act of 1948, the Voice of America is forbidden to broadcast directly to American citizens. The intent of the legislation is to protect the American public from propaganda actions by its own government.

I guess I can listen to VOA over the internet, but not over the air waves.

Now that is funny! It's protecting us from propaganda, I don't think it is working!

I would like to get one but they are kind of pricey.

Here is a link to a place to get started for finding shortwave broadcasting schedules in different languages..

http://ac6v.com/swl.htm

Scroll down and follow the links, to what catches your eye..

I like to listen to Radio Havana Cuba in English on 6.000 MHz and 6.140 MHz around 0400 to 0800 hours UTC.

Here on the West Coast, I hear most of the Pacific nations, and even lower power stations form places such as Papua, New Guinea plus several regional Australia stations.

If you shop around, finding a shortwave receiver (radio) to get started with is not that expensive.....

Do an Ebay search for a Radio Shack DX-390 (I like them so much - I have 4 of this model), DX-394, (digital tuning)/ DX-200, DX-150 or DX-160 (last 3 are analog dials) for under $75.00 dollars - more for the DX-394. Then again, you could spend thousands of dollars on just one receiver, if you want to..

Your antenna can be from a simple piece of copper wire hanging from a tree, to an expensive elaborate tower, rotor, and beam.

radiofish, what if someone had multiple copper wires spread out over a larger area of trees?
