Can Opener Recommendation

I need to cut the tops and bottoms out of aluminum cans (soft drink). Can anyone recommend a can opener that will do this? I have a couple of manual can openers and neither will do it.

Isn't the bottom just part of the can, pressed into shape?

Maybe one of the openers that opens the side of the can rather than the top?

I'd use a hole saw. If you need the ends entirely gone, I'd use a hacksaw (or a sawzall) and just lop the ends off.

A pair of scissors you don't mind losing or sharpening, or some tin snips. I don't know of any can opener that can grab and cut the molded bottoms of beverage cans. Unless it's the old boy scout can opener with a blade, in which case the scissors/tin snips would still be a lot easier.

I don't know about the bottoms but I have cut the tops out of them using an old army p38 can opener. If you are going to do a bunch it'll take a while but it'll do the job. I have yet to meet a can it couldn't open.

I'm talking about a couple of hundred cans. The cans can be drilled but they get hot and they are hard to hold still. I read where someone said he had removed the tops and bottoms with a can opener, but I have no idea where I read it. That's why I was hoping someone here might know of a can opener that would do the trick. If there is any easy way to do something, someone here has usually figured it out.

Using a can opener would be a whole lot faster and easier than the other methods, if I can find an opener that will work.

I know of can openers that will take the top off, a side opening opener, but not the bottoms..

1st guess would be is you are wanting to make a "pop can solar heater"

Most making one just cut a cross in the bottom and fold the edges in. That provides extra surface area to transfer the heat from the can to the air.

If you really need to remove the bottom, take them to a grinding wheel. One quick pass around the bottom and it falls off.

Get a cheap 19.00 side grinder with some 1mm discs for metal. Will make a nice clean quick cut.
