Apparently it's affecting computers all over the country.

Not at home. But it hit us hard at work... brought down the e-mail servers.

People laugh when I tell them I still use a text only email program. Fine by me.

The reasons MAC's or Linus systems usually don't get viruses is not that they are better then PC's/WIndows, its just that there are so few of them that hackers don't write viruses for them.

True.
But it's also because their OS's work differently than Windows-based machines.

Very true.
But in the 90's while living in AZ. I had the opportunity to sit along side the Mac Programmer.
After a time I was able to get into the data bas and make new lists etc.
We had a very easy database to program, made especially for Macs.
And when I left in '96 I was using System 7.
Then back in WI for a home PC I bought a H-P had that for several years until I bought a Dell.
Made a HUGE mistake on that one. Did not know at the time I had "customized" a high end one. When it came time to upgrade the RAM I discovered it had very Proprietary memory. Only from Dell could I buy it at a VERY inflated price, like 300+ to get to 1 Gig.
And it was getting old and slow.
So That is when I moved Back to a Mac. I gave the Dell away sold my monitor, and got a IMac, and that was 2 years ago and never will go back to a "PC".

I have a PC running XP, and I NEVER get a virus.
I run the standard XP firewall and I run AVG free antivirus.
I run Firefox browser, and I run NoScript add-on for it.
The big thing, though, is that I DO NOT run email on my PC AT ALL. For email I use yahoo or gmail exclusively - the viruses never get near my PC. It has been over two years since a virus slipped through to be scooped up by AVG on my system. Of course, there are literally dozens each day that are stopped by the on-line email services
