dishwasher hookup question

My dishwasher has a heating element to heat the water that it uses, this is handy so I can keep my water heater lower.
When we hook it back up, what is the reason it shouldn't be hooked up to the cold water line, so it never uses my hot water from the tank?

The element is just a booster heater. You should still hook it up to a hot water line.

Yep. booster heater. you'll blow the element trying to heat up too cold water. plus it'll probably use more energy trying to heat up the cold water than your hot water tank will!

Round here, when getting a certificate of occupancy on the new homes I build, my friendly neighborhood building inspector requires *125-*140F at the kitchen sink. This is specifically so that the dishwasher can do it's job of cleaning and sanitizing dishes.
