( 1947) John Deere M Tractor price ?

Hubby was helping an elderly neighbor in the hayfield today, they got to talking about tractors. Turns out he has a 1947 John Deere M for sale

The tractor hasn't been used in 20 years but Dh checked it out and it cranked right up first shot. Dh and 15 y/o son want to restore it and use it for light work around the farm. It mainly needs tires and a paint job. Is $ 2000 a good price?

Not picking on you, but just to be clear about the term----paint and tires don't restore a tractor. That is refurbishing. Going completely through the tractor to replace worn bearings and other parts it a good start toward a restoration

Refurbishing---rebuilding something to make it very usable and dependable, and often to enhance the item to better than new. Such as with a better quality of paint, enhanced with an alternator and 12 volt system, perhaps a touch of chrome, etc. They will often look as good as a restored item, sometimes better.

Restoring means bringing back to as near factory/showroom condition as possible.

The difference in cost can be several thousand dollars. Often restored tractor prices will not command a selling price to hardly cover the parts cost let alone some labor costs as well.

In my opinion refurbishing is always the way to go.

I have seen prices go from give it away to $6,000 for a M. They are good tractors and usual not abused like a A or a G. The $2000 for it is a good deal. I had one several years ago and had a flail mower on it. It already had a 12 volt system on it.

I sold one last summer for 1400. I had bought (cost $300) a 3 point conversion kit for it but I still had the original parts too. I had paid 500 when I bought it, used it for 5 years, sold it once for $700, bought it back for $700. The day I sold it, I got 4 other calls about it. Odd, since the ad had been in the ad paper for 2 weeks already.

That happened to me once when selling a Chevy Cavalier! We didn't get but one call for nearly two weeks, and then about 8 calls on the second to last day of the ad. Three of those callers were very serious buyers, and the car was gone by noon the next day, for the full asking price!!!!!

Hey, thanks everybody!

I'll have to do some major budget shuffling but we are going to get it.

Windy, I know what you're saying. It will be more of a refurbish job than a pure restoration, though I've no doubt DH will strip it all down and clean everything, just because that's the way he is.

I will take before and after photos and post them here, springvalley.

We looked at some videos on youtube last night. Great little tractors, love the sound of that engine!

Well, thanks again,

Pauline
