Old time cane processing demo

Just found out that someone is putting on a demonstration of "old time" cane/ syrup processing this weekend at Eubank, KY. Friday and Saturday.

Friday morning they are going to be running the cane through a crusher (if the mule cooperates anyway) using the old time press run by a mule walking around in a circle. Saturday they will be boiling it down.

I'm definitely taking both cameras and will go Friday morning for sure ... this is something I've never seen done.

This is a very interesting process. I remember doing it at a very young age but couldn't remember all the steps. Then several years ago they had a demo here that we went to. Wish they had a place here to buy the finished product. Sam

Whereabouts in Eubank? Nobody cooks syrup in our part of the world anymore & I'd love to have a couple gallons.

It's going to be in the park there in Eubank, not sure just where they're going to set up but it's not very big. I don't know for sure if they're going to have syrup to sell on Saturday after it cooks or not, but I'd guess they would if there's enough.

There's another one near Liberty, Ky that's open to the public and they sell it. I will try to get directions and post here..... I know a local guy that does it in Tompkinsville, Ky but he has a list of buyers an arm long! Can't even get on that waiting list!

What kind of syrup are you talking about? They make molasses around here. And you can buy that at most any store.

Mazelins in Scottsville market to the stores, but, if you read closely on the label, it isn't pure cane sorghum. Butler county had 3 places that I know of but all three gave it up. Don't forget the Sorghum Festival in West Liberty is the 25-27 but that's too far for me to go now that I have no relatives up there.

I would really like to hear what you learn from it. We have two (mule pulled) cane mills and we have no idea what the process might be.

I remember going somewhere as a child to watch this... I lived in Lookout, Ky up on Marrowbone, so it couldn't have been far from there.

Well, the whole thing was kind of a "no show" ... went over around 11 AM (advertised starting at 9 AM) and they were still looking for a mule and hoping they didn't get rained out.

Started raining 30 minutes later, didn't want the cameras wet so came home. It is still raining so gave it up as a bust. They were supposed to cook it off tomorrow but they are forecasting rain tomorrow as well so probably won't bother.
