Glass bottle skylights

Didn't want to hijack the "garbage house" thread (amazing house!), but I remembered seeing this some time ago. Another unconventional use of throwaway materials.

Be sure to watch the second video to see how light it is inside. I'd love to use this idea somewhere, just can't figure out where yet.

Well, my excuse is that I went to public school in Jackson, MS.

Do they work at night?

Maybe, had the video explained *how* the bleach solution stores the sunlight, we wouldn't be asking the question.

Oh, how one day I hope to be smart. Or at least one to catch on quicker.

I'm guessing the chlorox keeps things from growing moldy...

Smaller version of the "solar tube".

Glass bottle skylights - Homesteading Questions

The whole thing is under 300 bucks at Home Depot.

Since they are trying to save every dime they have, and don't need the tube part anyway, they might contact one of the manufacturers of these, and see how cheap they could buy just the dome part, that being all they need for an unfinished tin roof.
That 10" dome would be like a flood light in there compared to the bottle.

For a mission church, they might even find a manufacturer that would donate the domes.

The water in the bottle I assume is there to reflect/refract outside light to the bottom of the bottle, increasing the effectiveness of it as a light source. The bleach, as PP said, is too keep from culturing stuff that would interfere with the light transfer.

Overall, I give it an 8 out of 10 for innovative use of trash ! NOW if they can score some gallon glass jugs !

Those solar tubes sure do work! You are right, they are like spot lights.

What I didnt grasp was why they just didnt use windows.

Maybe in a full moon.... There are some full moon nights that I swear I could about go out and work in the yard/garden. But you try that and find there are lot heavy duty shadows and such, not like daylight at all though bright enough to walk around without a flashlight.

For security, I would think, and less heat in hot climates. One video I saw was a church and they had to protect against vandals so used heavy shutters. The bottle lights allowed them to work with the shutters closed. I'd be tempted to try this on my storage/work shed which is made of concrete blocks with one tiny window. Most of the time I work with the door open, but in the winter, it would be nice to be able to close it and still have non-electic light.

I saw this clip on FB and went to youtube to watch more about them. What a terrific idea...especially for poor countries. In one clip they said using a 2 liter bottle in this way gives off an illumination of a 40-60 watt bulb depending on the weather!

No, they don't work at night, but help illuminate rooms that don't get natural light during the day, plus eliminate the need to burn electricity during the daytime.

Yes, the clorox keeps the water from getting murky with mold.

I'm already planning to install some in the roof of my potting shed. I don't have electric run to it and it's quite dim in the back.

What a great idea and cost savings. For mission work I can see why this is a good idea. I need to "file" this away in my brain for someday when I need it.

Sorry, I realized after posting that that wasn't very nice. They made it sound like a chemical reaction, like glow in the dark things, but all the chlorinated water is for is to keep the water clear. It just funnels daylight into the room.
