What do you love about homesteading?

Woke up this morning to a gorgeous and finally a cool day after 3 solid months of heat. Made my heart sing! So sitting out there with my cuppa and watching them pour the concrete in the barn I got to counting my blessings here. Made me wonder what makes all of you happy with your homestead.

I honestly think the best thing is the rest after a long struggle. That evening after the spring garden is finally all seeded or the first cool day after a long hard summer or the first balmy day after a long mucky winter. That calf that struggles to it's feet after a hard birth or those few tomatoes that survived the hailstorm. The hard sure does make the reward seem all the more worth it!

The peace and quiet of no traffic....when ATV riders aren't trying to find a way to get onto the property and air planes aren't dipping low for a closer look.

I love watching the dragon flies and butterflies flitting around. Last evening I was trying to week whack and several bumble bees dive bombed me... so I turned the weed whacker sky-ward and whacked 'em!

I love the front (western) pond at sunset and the rear (eastern) pond at sunrise. I love the music the rain makes on the metal roof. I love the majesty of the zillion stars at night....can't see that in the city.

What I enjoy most about homesteading is the ability to walk among the beautiful trees & shrubs, relishing the quiet of a country life and knowing my God did all this.

The sights, sounds and smells as I hang laundry on the clothesline. From there I can see everything; the barn with a sleeping livestock gardian dog, the goats rubbing themselves on the fence, the sheep grazing in the pasture, the chickens scratching in the dirt, the garden spilling out it's bounty. It's heaven on earth here, what's not to love?

Realizing that size doesn't matter. My co-workers planted expansive gardens this year and they have failed miserably. I did some small space container gardening that has been highly successful and better than I ever imagined. It is awesome to realize that you don't have to get a lot of acreage in order to homestead.

It's the goats that I love. They bring me incredible serenity......milk, cheese, yogurt.

I love having goats and horses and chickens, but I think my favorite thing right now is my Maytag wringer washer. It's set up outside, not far from the clothes line. I so enjoy washing clothes out in the sunshine and fresh air!

The flavors! Nothing tastes like that first sun warmed tomato eaten fresh in the garden. Home grown strawberries have no equal. Sweet corn picked minutes before you boil or grill it is the peak of home grown flavor. And no store bought egg compares with the ones from grass and bug fed chickens or ducks, store bought isn't as nutritious either.

The privacy and quiet. We are tucked back in a corner with woods all around. We have a Shower outside and we can safely shower outside near the edge of the woods, surrounded by flower beds and no one sees or cares! Peace and quiet.

Sittin on the porch in my rocking chair, listening to a thundershower on the tin roof and the smell of rain on dry dirt. A second glance at the garden rows when the weeding is done and along comes a rain shower, looks like the corn is growing 6" an hour, sure makes it stand up and look proud. Chickens ducking for cover. The cool breeze that a thundershower brings when the cool coast air hits the hot air in the valley and makes thunderboomers....James

I LUV the Total peace & quiet....no noise other than Nature, seeing no people & watching the critters roam around in their protected little world.
I LUV the sunflowers, the little pond I dug myself for the ducks, & the total Calm the country brings.
I also LUV the smell of the Woodstove & the serenity of watching the fire on a cold blistery day.....& finally I LUV that I don't care if I have fancy clothes, pretty furniture or the Best of anything, because I LUV living my life on my tiny, rundown 2 acres of Heaven!

Skinny dipping in the creek or dancing nekkid in the rain and not having to worry about scandalizing the neighbours. Having newly hatched babies in the kitchen. Growing any thing I want in my container garden and knowing it's safe from curious eyes. Relaxing in the hammock at sunset listening to the swamp thrushes singing and watching glittering gnats flying in the sunset rays filtering through the willow tree. Cooking over a real fire in the back yard and having folks over to sit in a circle around the fire. Foraging on the property and not being concerned about if it got sprayed with chemicals. Playing loud music if I want and knowing it won't disturb anyone else cuz there's nobody nearby. Not having to mow the lawn if I don't want to and not upsetting somebody else's bylaws.

I love the pride and personal satisfaction of providing food for DH and I. There is nothing better than eating a meal that came from my garden, or gazing at shelves of brightly colored jars filled with pickles, fruit spreads, and other goodies. I feel good knowing that my hard work, time and effort made that food possible. I know exactly what is in it, and there are no 12 letter words that I cannot pronounce in the ingredient list!

I agree with the OP that the most satisfaction comes in the moments of peace we steal after the hard stuff.

Now that we have had two days of cooler weather? I like the challenges that I come up against the most. I like figuring out what to do next and how to do it. I love my garden. Love fresh milk - love my simple life.

I love seeing my cows and knowing they are content. It makes all the hard work worthwhile!

looking around when a hard job is done. such a feeling of accomplishment! i also love the critters, the goats who nuzzle, the horses who love scratches, the dogs who cant' get enough attention. i just love being HOME, and now its getting to have that feeling too. that when you have to leave for the day and then when you get near, its that feeling of being where you need to be. drinking fresh goat milk, having a meal made all with stuff i made/grew, etc., smell of bread fresh out of the oven. geesh, i could go on forever.

Gosh, I should have elaborated! Sitting on the portch in the early morning with my spinning wheel. A comortable feeling seeing all the jars in the pantry. Hanging out under the big shade tree braiding onions. My Angus bull, he is just a big Teddy bear, comes a running when i have weeds to feed him. When he was at the neighbors breeding his cows(he must have been done with his job), he saw me, stood there the whole night bawling and the neighbor brought him home before I woke up. He's just so cute. My soil, yes, pictures of it- it's wounderful!
