We just bought (this spring) two year old apple trees. We lost the Crispin apples we had (but also lost two plums, so it may have been bad stock we got).

Since we're kind'a close, what apple trees do you grow & how do you like them? The Arkansas Blacks are doing ok as well as the Yellow Delicious, although they aren't old enough to produce yet.

We planted Red and Yellow Delicious but both died.I had Winesap before and liked them.Granny Smith are good.

What aggrivates me is I've had problems with Fungus in my Fruit Trees and my wife won't let me get stuff to take care of it.Trees were loaded this year but lost alot of it.She says I don't know why we have them they don't produce? WELL WOMAN IF YOU WOULD LET ME TAKE CARE OF STUFF!!!!!

We've had problems already with Cedar Rust and the trees haven't been here a year yet. The Arkansas Blacks haven't been affected though.

Maybe we'll try planting some of the Winesap this fall. Not too crazy about Granny Smith though, too sour for me......but I suppose I could always drence them in a sugar syrup & can them..

You could try a Grimes Golden they are an old fashioned yellow apple that do very good for us in zone5. They have a slightly spice taste and are very good for cooking and sauce as well as eating out of hand . Our trees are loaded almost every year.

DW's parents have a few apple trees. Not sure what kind they are, but they have 2 different varieties. The bigger tree was starting to ripen a month ago or so, but the apples were falling like crazy. We filled a giant trash bag with them, and now have a freezer full of pie filling and applesauce. Some were a bit green, but great cookin'!

Rock, I'd like to tell you what I was told last year-and the Lady that told it had beautiful, worm-free apples. She said the C.C agent told her to cover the trunk, from the ground to the first branches, with VASELINE! And renew it as necessary. Dont know how much I believe of it--but her apples are nice. You can get big jars of vaseline cheap at D.G stores.
