Been robbed ...

Had a "gut feeling" last night after spotting what I thought was one of my hunting rifles in an add on Backpage. The odds of someone having the identical setup as mine in the same state are astronomical: NIB XYZ rifle w/o scope, w/ XYZ mounts, XYZ stock, XYZ sling... even the box was opened on the identical end in the pictures posted, it was sickening I print saved the add to show the GF cause I knew she wouldn't believe me when I got back.

So I didn't sleep all night, wondering if we had been robbed. So got up this morning, GF was gone early so I send her an email saying I'm heading up north to check on some stuff.

I get there and my gut sinks.

Busted window, tools on table, BIG rock, foot prints, door open. Not how I left the place.

Open the door, look inside, sure enough a big mess, cabinets left open, stuff everywhere. They tried on my snake boots, went thru a go-bag of my clothes. Went thru the medicine cabinet.

Then I start checkin to see what's missing.

MIA:
most of our FOOD
3 cases of beer
Glenlivet
2 1.75L bottles of Jack Daniels
several cases of Soda pop
Dry goods

They left EVERYTHING of $$$ value alone, I'm mean everything, all my weapons, ammo, electronics, tv, DVD player, radio, ipod stereo, spotting scopes, range finder, power tools, gennies, solar equipment, inverters, chargers, you name it, they left it sitting there, none of which was hidden, ammo and weapons on the back bed, right next to the go-bag of clothes, ammo on the front table, everything in plain view after entering.

Would you prosecute someone for stealing FOOD?

Didn't they take your hunting rifle too? Seems like it will be easy to locate them.

P.S. The alcohol isn't a food item either.

I would prosecute someone for breaking and entering AND stealing. Yep, sure would.

Sorry for your loss but think about it, they cannot be prosecuted till caught. The ad that tipped you off wasn't food. Do you have a good police department that can make a "buy" and bust the thief? Have you set cameras and surprises for the person or persons if they return? Whatever they took, food, guns or your expensive glen livet, sure they should be caught and prosecuted. Might be that will deter them from further worse crimes in the future. If your place up north where your stiff was vandalized and stolen is far away or in a different jurisdiction from where the ad ran, could the thief be someone you think is a friend who knows what you've got??? I hope he/she doesn't make a double whammy and hit both your places! Hope you catch him/her before he/she does more harm.

The ad was for an identical setup, mine was still sitting in the box by the bed. The ad triggered a gut feeling. Weird as it is, we still were broke into and the weapons are/were safe.

Police/sheriff are almost non-existent out there. Couldn't even get them to print my buddies tobacco shop after it was robbed, just filled out a report and said to submit it to insurance co.

They only took food stuff and dry goods, not anything else.

Well, go with your gut! Something is very wrong. I'm glad your gun was still there but my gut says they'll be back and it's somebody that knows you. Don't be a softy and make excuses for them! Also with an almost nonexistent police force, there won't be a pro-active proscecutor, either. It's up to you to protect your stuff. This was the handwriting on the wall for you. Now the big question is, what do you have and how can you protect it?

Hello Crash Test.

I am confused ... could you please explain the reason behind having two seperate properties?

I am sad, and sorry, this happened to you ... amazing they didn't take more, and wouldn't be surprised if they came back to get more. Did you load up what you could to take back with you?

People are so mean.

My gut says they will be back, as well.
I'm so sorry.....desperation may be starting to raise it's ugly head. OR, it could just be thugs or punks.

Sounds like teens / early 20's just 'joy smashing'.
I would prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.
Stealing is stealing. Period.
They will tell all their thug buddies about your cashe` of weapons and SOMEONE will be back to steal those too.

Mama Crow, I don't know what Crash Test's reason for 2 places is, but we have 2 places. A house in town that is the main home while we finish the house out at the farm 80 miles away. We have full cooking setups in both places.

given his state is Arizona, I'd guess it's something like house in the city for working during the week, and a cabin up in the mountain area for hunting (guns, food, beer, JackD. etc.) Of course it could also be that he was visiting his GF in town.

CrashTestRanch, I, too, think "kids" with this one. You're really lucky the guns didn't go walk-about. Since they didn't take anything they can really sell for $$ it may well be hard to find them unless you can enlist the help of the state police somehow.

Sounds to me like someone passing thru or departing the area. My first guess would be an illegal returning home. Crossing the international border with food would be OK, guns would get them busted. We have had a huge number of illegals departing the state; however, so far, at least in the cities, I have not heard of any crimes attributed to them. The remote countryside here is different as the rural economy stinks.

If it was me, i'd prosecute.
If someone needs food, I'll give them my last crumb, but don't steal from me.

WHY would you demand an answer to such a question? It's really not your concern.

I have three places. I would be mortified if you asked me to explain why.

How do you procecute someone for stealing food, unless you catch them with the goods. Do you procecute everyone with a full belly? Or just the drunks with a full belly?

Sorry about your loss. But maybe this is your wake-up call to prepare for worse vandals.

It doesn't matter what was stolen, theft is theft. And ransacked the place to boot. Doesn't sound like a person was just look'n to fill his belly. I would hope if someone were in THAT desparate a situation that they'd take food & leave everything else well enough alone, heak, maybe even write a "thank you" note.

Not sure why it matters how many "residences" you have either.

You MUST call the sheriff - wait as long as it takes.

It's not just you - there is a statistical sheet they add your robbery to. If there's been a bunch of break-ins nearby - or as close to nearby as you can get in the boonies - the sheriff dept will make their presence known somewhat more often.

This time they're hungry - next time - who knows?

We have a LOT of druggies up here - and with the economy the way it is here - NO jobs - ya' gotta really gotta' watch your stuff. I'd haul all my guns with me when I left and leave little of value there. Sad to say.

Take Care!

If someone broke into our cabin and just took some food and left, I'd figure they were hungry and chalk it up to that. However, ransacking your place and trashing stuff tells me they weren't hungry - just mean. The next time they may set the place on fire or something!

I'd file a police report just on principal - even if the police won't/can't do anything about it. At least it would provide an official record just incase the thief breaks in when you are there and you have to defend yourself. Then I would invest some money in a self monitored remote webcam - At least you could log on a couple of times a day to keep a check on your place.

How do you take the above QUESTION, complete with please in it, and turn it into Mama Crow demanding an answer? She wasn't asking for the location, a key to the place, or when it would be convenient to break in...All she asked was why they had 2 seperate properties. I think your paranoia radar malfunctioned on this post.

I have 2 properties myself. One in south central wisconsin and one near Ashland. Why? Because I can.

The big question is...

Will they come back now, knowing what you have?

Will they blabber about all the guns/ammo to someone who will come and help themselves?

I would consider these questions carefully. Sorry it happened.
