using an outhouse for a smoker
sounds really gross i know. heres the deal, a neighbor of mine has a contract with the forest service. they are replacing some outhouses in the national forest where i live. My neighbor is responsible for getting the outhouses out of the woods. Now he has 30 of them at his place. They have been there for two years. he said i can have one. i am in need of a smoker and i thought hey this might work, or it might be gross. He said they have been sitting empty for two years and they dont smell. Emotionally, i couldnt care less that it used to be used for an outhouse, i just dont want to do something that might make me or my wife sick or create poor quality smoked meat. any thoughts??

I dont know for sure, they are what fiberglass?
think I would just make a wood one myself.

What are these outhouses made out of? Are they porta-johns?
I'm with Downhome, would just make one and pack the walls with sawdust.

Dont think I would ever serve the meat to strangers, if they ever found out the fact u got 2 outhouses, and one isnt for each of u , OR they see smoke comeing out from one, and know you havnt had beans lately. They might not like the thought of the idea. Then, I could see a lite, (very light) bulb comeing in on peoples heads. Hey, they say, Ive already got an outhouse here. Ill just not use it for the origional purpose when im smokeing meat. So, they make a small fire on top the pile and go to smokein. Works good till late one night, they forget they got it burning, and go in, cut off a haunch of bacon, settle down. The fire happens to reach up getting bigger now that its fuled with hair. That causes u to whizz on it, putting it out, and really smokeing the meat LOL.

Don`t think I would worry about it, if they are wood ones that is. Would never use a fiberglass one for that purpose. You may want to take a power washer to it and give it a good cleaning then hit it with some sanitizer, otherwise should work good. >Thanks Marc

yeah, its all wood. i think its made out of redwood. its been disconnected from the tank below it for several years.

i think ill pressure wash it, rinse it all down with bleach and then run smoke through it for several days. they were all disinfected before they were taken from the camp sites.

Y'know, I just wouldn't do it - but thats me, mentally I just couldn't eat anything prepared in an outhouse.

I got one from the Forest Service when I was stationed in Alaska and it was great for smoking salmon. Just cleaned the insides and smoked it for a couple days before using it for meat and no issues. They also make good tool sheds, you ought to get a couple of them.

You can actually make a smoke house out of about anything.
Wish I had one, I would put it front of my house for the son to wait for the bus, and to make my neighbors happy!

Maybe put a "Smoking Allowed" sign on the door to cover up the crescent moon, or whatever indicates its original purpose?

we're making our smoker look like an outhouse. We made it out of concrete and now we're gonna add barn boards to make it look lik an out house, just cause I think it will look cute
