Bought a jeep but have licensing question here in Illinois

I just bought a jeep that I will pick up tomorrow. However, the licensing facility does not open till Tuesday. I do know that my insurance begins immediately upon purchase for up to 30 days. However, how does licensing work? Do they give you a few day grace period as long as you have the title in hand?

Call the state police/highway patrol tomorrow and ask them. I suspect the laws from state to state will vary. In WV you could go to a court house and get a plate. In WV you need a special permit to tow an unlicensed vehicle if you are not a towing company.

In 1985 I bought a van in MS and drove it to and from PA several times without a plate. It took MS almost a month to send a plate. During that time I was stopped once in KY by a newbie trooper. He let me go with a verbal warning. I had cops pull up behind me at traffic lights when I didn't have a plate and they didn't pull me over.

I never understand why people ask questions like this. Call your DMV and ask the people who know for sure. In most states you'd be in violation, but Ill may be diffeent.

If you bought through a dealer you should have received official plates or a temporary tag. Private party, the title should be enough if you get pulled over on the way to the Secretary of State's outpost. Unless you're in Chicago, in which case you're more likely than not to get ticketed, booted, or towed.

Okay folks, please think real hard here....I'm not trying to beat the system. When I wrote this, it was the weekend and the DMV is closed on Mondays...and I purchased it on a weekend. Bret, I hope this helps you understand....

I did understand that, but asking a legal question on a homesteading site, or anywhere else, is an iffy proposition. If the info you get is wrong...what's your defense? "Judge, I was told by anonymous sources on Homesteading Today that I'd be fine...". Good luck with that. I once dealt with a woman who entered and seized property from some of her renters. She based her actions on a paperback book of "law" printed in California in the mid 1950's. She went to jail for burglary. See where I'm going with this?

In NY state, you would get a ticket for no insurance, no plates, no inspection sticker and no registration. Car would be impounded and towed
