Hay Question

Good evening all,

we purchased hay for the first time last summer and over estimated what we would need to carry us thru Dec-March in southeast Texas :-)

My question is how long will hay be good, square bales in a barn ? Our two Dexters are still readily eating it, but I'm not sure if there is any nutritional value left (It's Jiggs Hay if that matters)

thanks,
Margaret

You're fine. The nutritional value will go down steadily over time, but there's lots left for a year or two (or three or four). I have hay in my mow that was baled 10 years ago that I still feed to dry cows, although not as their only feed.

It loses vit A and D first but over a year you won't notice it. Besides Dexters are very hardy cattle and good feed converters.
