Question about staining wood

I bought a gorgeous manufacturer's floor sample door. The top corner of the door was not stained like the rest of the door so if you wanted to order a natural wood door you would know what it looked like. The problem I have is even after sanding the corner it will not accept stain. Obviously the company sealed the wood with something that soaks in a long way. Does anyone have any idea how I can solve this problem? I expect there is something that will break down their sealing material and make the pores open to absorb stain. Thanks for your help.

Not sure if there is something out there to do what you want, but there are painting techniques that will give you a wood grain affect.

I had forgotten about that Catherine I have done that before. Certainly an option if I can't "get into" the natural wood and stain it.

It's quite possible that there's glue or sealant in the wood that's blocking your stain. Try wet sanding the area with some 220 wet/dry paper using mineral spirits (paint thinner) as your liquid. You can use a small container to dip your paper into and back it with a sanding block.

You could also try a more solid based stain like ZAR

Make sure with any oil based stains/products to soak staining/cleaning rags in water or let completly dry before throwing them away because they can catch fire.

Not sure how it would work for this situation out but depending on the stain brand (and VOC) you could mix it with a tung oil like waterlox and try that
