Electric Fence

So I'm having problems with my electric fence.
I had it working but deer has torn it down. So i've fixed it but never left it on because the goats stayed put. WELL looks as if they are aware the fence isn't on.

So I go to turn it on and it's not hot. I dont have a voltage meter for it but I do have the tester that is just a light bulb.

I've figured out that if I just have the top line hot, it works great,
its the bottom 2 that don't work (1 at a time). I've walked the line and all looks fine and the same as the top.

the bottom has been broken more and repaired (I had to replace the top thanks to the deer) and is less "pieces". Could this be the problem? I've got 2 grounding rods on and using barbed wire in between the hot as ground.

<-- I feel like I'm the horse and the goats are the little man

Most likely it's grounding out somewhere along the bottom wires.

Go along and inspect it CLOSELY, and you'll probably see it's touching something somewhere. Leave the charger on and connected to all the wires, and you may be able to hear it "popping" (if it's a pulsing charger)

If the problem was in a splice, you'd have power on one side but not the other

LOL, I've spliced my temp wires more than I can remember.

Like Bearfoot said, you probably have a short on the lower wire.

Happy hunting!

Make sure all hot wires are on the insulators properly. And the grounded barb wire running between the hot sounded like a good idea to me also, but from experience, if the deer hit the fence wide open, they can get all those wires messed up so thet your hot will be touching the directly grounded barb wire.

Thanks,
Scott

Also...check the insulators for bird poop and grasshoppers. I have had the fence start popping from those. I don't know why the birds like sitting on fence posts so much...grrrrrr

Make sure the connection from the top wire to the others is good.

That was my first thought, but none was really working until I hooked them up 1 at a time - that's how I've got just the top working. I've been busy working so I've got them secure.

I hope to work on it later tonight or tomorrow - thanks
