Hi Ms Daisy - I'm in VT, though sometimes think of moving to the Maine coast. While we just have a small 'farmette', we do raise almost all our own meat, veggies, and fruit.

We are in Maine, moved here in 2005.

We have 150 acres of forest with 1/4 mile of river frontage.

That's awesome!!! Our old home shared a driveway and we had neighbors on all sides of our yard, so privacy was something we definitely were lacking. lol Now, our yard is about 2 acres with the closest neighbor about 1/4 mile away. I mean, not to sound like a socia-phob or anything, but it's nice being able to garden without 10 people watching me do it. lol

I am a neighbor to MaineFarm Mom and we live in a town of 57 people. I am presently doing Nigerian Dwarf goats, for milk and we have a small garden.

Our township has like 250 people. Houses are generally a mile apart, some are in clusters.

The forest is dense so you never see anyone anyway. Our driveway is 300 foot long and at the road it is lined by forest, so to even look toward our house from the road you only have a small 'window'.

Hi and welcome to the wonderful world of homesteading!

Our farmstead is located in the mountains of northern central Vermont, so a bit east of you. Both my wife and I lived, before we met, near Augusta. Funny thing was she had followed me (accidentally) there from NH, then again followed (accidentally) me to Hanover, NH. Finally we met. Kismet! We finally settled across the river here in Vermont about 20 years ago.

We pay the bills raising pigs on pasture and selling primarily through local stores and restaurants plus some to individuals. We also have chickens, ducks, geese, sometimes sheep, dogs and three kids also on pasture (homeschooled).

Advice: plant apple trees, asparagus, rhubarb and strawberries ASAP. Set a piece of black plastic on a patch of soil to kill off weeds for next year's garden. Get chickens and a pig or two for meat - easy animals. Rabbits are another good starter livestock. Have a dog (or many) - they're invaluable on the homestead.

Cheers

-Walter
