'caulking'?

Looking for a cheap (as in 'free') material to caulk the gaps between boards in my barn.

Was thinking of something like daub and wattle, or maybe some other mud/hay mixture.

Any suggestions that could stand up to decent rainful/snowfall? Not looking for super insulating or even super weather proof, just looking for something to fill the cracks and cut down on drafts.

With the economy and the job situation in my state, even buying clay/sand would present a challenge

Thanks!

I wonder if you did some research at the library about mud and straw mixtures if you could use something like that?

Where do you live? Do you have a lot of clay in your area?
Can you dig up some clay on your own place, or friends/relatives property?
Mix with straw and horse manure for a good mud plaster that will last for years.

My father had us seal the siding gaps of the barn on our place with clay and portland mix chinking. 30 years later the original chinking is still mostly intact.
