Thumbs up Root Cellar - Food Storage

Our local ag agents created a nice "self-sufficiency" seminars series. Here is a link they sent. Out on root cellars. The link to Missouri is especially helpful because it gives a list of optimal temperatures.

our home is super well insulated, so we can close off one of our rear closets and the temperature in that closet stays well below the normal household temp but above freezing most of the time, esp in the winter..when we would be storing vegetables..we store our root crops in there in plastic buckets and containers..stacked..and they keep well all winter..never gets above 55 in that closet in the winter time

Great papers! My parents made a root "room" in the cellar of our old house house when I was a kid. It was in the corner of the cellar. They kept it cool enough or warm enough by cracking open the window or the door. If it was too cold they opened the door enough to let some heat from the wood stove (in the cellar, we never had cold floors) in. I store tons of food in the cellar side of our farmhouse. It's a great tool.

Here are a couple other practical lower cost ideas that may be more within reach for most now.
Mike Oehler- $50 and up Underground House Book http://undergroundhousing.com/index.html

Earthbag Building http://earthbagbuilding.com/

I bought may bags for the a cellar, just have not had the time to get to it yet.
