Measuring an unknown wire fence?

Getting some rolls of wire fence from a friend who just had it laying around after a project. Thing is it isn't a full roll. Any advice on how to figure the length? Pretty sure I'll have to unroll but tips for keeping it from being a major headache would be appreciated.

Net wire idea that I have used before: The verticle wires are a set distance apart (6" or 12"), if you dont have a lot of it you could count those verticles and multiply by .5' for 6" or 1' for 12".

Barbe wire idea that my dad uses(gives a ball park idea): find volume of full roll of barbe wire (Volume=3.14 X radius^2 X Height; find volume of partial roll of barbed wire using same formula, and find volume of empty core using same formula.\

Compute 1st volume and subtract empty core volume to get a ratio (Full volume/1320ft)
Then compute partial roll volume and set over variable (Partial volume/X)
Set them as equal (Full volume/1320ft = Partial volume/X)
THen cross multipy and divide for X, X is the esimated feet on the roll of wire.

Weigh it. Compare weight to the weight of a known length.

Measure the average diameter. Multiple diameter by 3.14 (pi).

That will give you the length of each coil.

Count coils and multiply by length of coil.

Hi,
How about:
Cut off 10 ft, and weigh the 10 ft piece.
Weigh the whole roll.
Divide the weight of 10 ft into the weight of the whole roll.
Multiply that number by 10, and that's how many feet you have on the roll.

I guess it its heavy enough, or you have a good scale for weighing small things, you could just cut off 1 ft instead of 10 ft.

Places that sell the rolls of wire, maybe the one that sold that roll to the original purchaser, maybe even the manufacturer's website, can tell you how long the wire in a complete roll is and how much it weighs. Now weigh the part-roll and it's basic arithmetic to tell how much of the length in a new roll you have left.
