Looking for sturdy tripod to hold spotting scope

The tripod and head that holds my Burris spotting scope is too wimpy. I am looking for something more substantial. Sturdy 8 - 10 pound tripod ( I will not be backpacking it) with three way head for fine tuning. Any ideas?

Check out a photography shop. Or maybe a telescope tripod.

Typically, photographers used to add a hanging weight from the center of a tripod to increase the stability. The old Bogen heads were primo for a lot of the 16mm and ENG applications, but those would run up in the hundreds of dollars. This one looks like a reasonable head at a reasonable price:

I have a Bogden with their micro ball head and quick detach/attachment system for my KOWA 821TSN. Total setup’s just shy of $300. I use it primarily for silhouette matches, an occasional 800,900,1000 yard match, and practice. IMHO the quick detach is worth it if you bounce back and forth between mounts like I do. It only takes seconds to switch between my bench mount, the tripod, or a prone stand as the mounting plate stays mounted on the scope.

The micro ball, is very quick to adjust, sometimes too quick, but it’s a simple and reliable head.

It does pretty well in the wind, even here in KS, but there are times when even a center weight won’t help and nothing short of a surveyors tripod will work. Some of the guys we shoot matches with have welded up stands with wheels that you sit on.

Get a tripod for a construction laser level.
