16 oz. propane cylinders??

What can I do with the empty ones? Noone around here will refill them.
Is there any other use for them?
I does not seem appropriate to put them in the trash. It may even be illegal.
Can they go in the landfill? I have about 2 dozen of them sitting around the garages.
What do y'all do with the dumb things?
Thanks for any help on this.

We got one of these and quit buying them.

Once in a while one won't seal back up after refilling, it gets thrown away. Then the next time we go camping, we stop by the campground dumpster and pick up a few new bottles to refill. It's not so bad throwing one away after it has been refilled several times.

I saw someone cut the bottoms off a few and make windchimes. I hate windchimes.

I refill mine too. Best to refill non-rusty threaded bottles. If I have one that wants to leak after refilling I use a piece of a board and tap on the threaded end and it will stop the leak-------might find one once in a while that wants to still leak a little-----at the valve-----If so I just hook it to what ever I am using that uses these tanks that way I don't loose a bottle full of gas.

I picked up one of the refilling fittings last month... haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

I haven't thrown any of the 16oz cans out lately, knowing I was going to get the fitting.

Old John,

I guess Ed Norman's refill valve fixes that, but if you don't mind me asking, why do you use so many of these? If you are hiking / camping, then I would think they are pretty heavy and was going to suggest looking into the multi-gas camping stoves. But if you are car camping, and using a two burner stove, then maybe go up to the 20 lbs tank. Since you would need to use one to refill these bottles anyway. Plus, Coleman, and other brands have the attachments the connect not only the stoves, but can have a lantern fueled by that same line.

Those refill fittings work great. To get them the fullest that I could I would

1. Put the adapter on an empty bottle
2. Set the bottle in front of a heater
3. Remove the adapter
4. Put the bottle in the freezer for about 20 minutes

This creates a real nice vacuum in the bottle.

5. Attach the adapter to a 20lb tank
6. Attach small bottle to tank.
7. Turn upside down and open up for about a minute or so.

It stops refilling. Can't overdo it.

Well, It's kind of a personal thing to us................But you asked........

Actually we are a Family of "Asatru" that means "True to the Aesir and Vanir".
They are the Ancestral Northern European Gods. Each month we pay Homage to Them with Libations and Toasts, to Them. These Blessings are done, ours at least, out on the Hill, in a Grove of large trees, at Night, because that is the way we think Our Ancestors paid Homage to their/our Gods. There are small groups of us across the Country, in Europe, the UK and Australia.
Some Folks use the name "Germanic Heathenry" because these are the Gods of the Heath, rather than the cities. It's all similar....
There are a couple larger national Gatherings of our Folks a few times a year, too.
You can "Google" Asatru or Germanic Heathenry, if you are curious. Lots of information available.

We usually have our Blessings printed out, so that everyone present can follow along. And, it is much easier to read by the light of a propane lantern than by flickering torch light. Although, we do use those too.
There are some of us who have parts of the Blessings memorised, or extemporise. But most do not.
So each month. we carry our lanterns out on the hill. It's Easier to walk by the lamplight too. It'll probably be a bit cheaper to use the propane lantern by refilling the cylinder.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.
