Sort of Brick Veneer

Anytime I cant seem to find an answer on google or locally, I can rely on the expertise of this great community.

So here is my situation:

We moved into a home my grandfather left us that is a prefab double wide. The home is on a great foundation. When they brought it in my grandfather had someone stop by and ask how he was going to "underpin" it. He planned to have someone put brick around the whole under side.

Well this guy told my grandfather he could make a faux brick underpinning that would even feel like brick. After looking at picts of his work my grandfather had him do it. The price was way under the price of regular brick.

As I look at the "brick" now it still looks perfect about 6 years later. What it appears was done was the man put a mesh screening all around the base of the house. Then put some sort of cement mix smeared onto that. Then took some type of tool and made the brick pattern. Over that he used something to color the front a brick color (only the front - on the back its still concrete color) and added speckles to make it even more real looking. The whole thing is about 1 inch thick and very sturdy.

In all truth it looks great. I am building a porch on the front of the house and want to add the same thing to the underside of it. Of course to match it I want to find someone that does similar work.

My question is...What is this called. I cant find anything online about it, or anywhere else.

Brickcoat...the undercoat is covered w/ brick colored mortar and the horozontal lines are cut w/ a tool and a straightedge then the verticals. It is often used to dress up a shabby old brick home. The two layers of mortar seal all the old cracks stopping up the drafts and improving the look of the home at the same time. It is popular in NJ and PA. Gardenstate Brickcoat is a popular contractor 'round here.

Interesting. I wonder if that could be a "do it yourself" thing? They sell spray paint that looks like stone or brick...gritty, speckly, etc.

What Wis Bang said.. Many do the same but free cut the joints to look like stone. Many times it's backed by plywood when used as underpinning with wire lath nailed to the plywood. Unfortunately the plywood rots and draws insects.

We call it "drawn on brick" here. Done on a lot of houses now days, mostly over cinder block foundations, because it's so much cheaper than real brick.

My concern about it is down the road if water gets under it, and freezes, pops off a section, how you would ever match it ( as you are trying to do now ).....
