Getting the lingo down?

So I've got an interest in livestock, but not much familiarity. I ask some animal folks about the breed and their just "Oh it is a 'yadayadayada' cross with 'yadayada'." and in my head I'm left going . And don't even get me started on the thousand names between all the animals for breeder males and females, geldings, young, and all the other stuff.

How do you get this stuff 'down' in your head?

I grew up with animals but if you didn't it can be confusing. Just read as much as you can and ask questions most people love talking about their stock.

Here's a link to a site that gives you some easy info on terminology:

http://www.proprofs.com/flashcards/s...ck-terminology

And here's a site that gives tons of info on all breeds of livestock:

http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/

After you're around it and hear it for a little while, it becomes second nature. Don't sweat it too much.

yeah, what flagwaver said.

is there a certain line you want to know about, like horses or goats? you would get more answers if we knew what exactly you are asking about.

Ya learn the difference between a Tamworth and a Kenworth by doing. Keep at it and do some Googling when someone seems to be putting you on with trick/joke requests........

And find a friend you can ask....

Or subscribe to Backwoods Home Magazine or Mother Earth News

Just keep working at it. Like anything new, the more you use it, the better you get at it.

As the others have said, just keep working at it, listening, asking and don't be afraid to appear dumb. The more your interest in livestock becomes realility, the more familiar the terms will become.

To confuse issues even further, farming terminology can vary from person to person, one area of the country to another and from one country to another. I still remember coming on to this forum and talking about chooks and people asking what a chook was.

While having spent all of my adult life farming, I didn't come from farming stock and can recall the confusion of weird terms that are now everyday language.

Cheers,
Ronnie
