Deal or run??

A woman (unknown to me) contacted me, about a month ago, via email and asked if I was still looking for laying hens. I replied that I was. She said that she was moving and needed to get rid of her 10 or 12 hens. I said I would take them. She asked if I knew anyone interested in meat rabbits (couple adults and 8 babies), I said I could make those go away too.

The number of animals goes up and down. Where we meet to exchange changes, she will deliver. The date changes. Several emails have been exchanged during this month. Meanwhile I've made arrangements to give 5 of the rabbits away to a couple friends. At no point was anything ever said about money. I assumed I was doing her a favor since she was moving and couldn't take the animals along.

Today she calls and says it is time to discuss price?????? She said $5 each. I was totally surprised and said maybe for the rabbits but I wasn't paying that for someone's old hens. I really feel like I was backed into a corner here.

Would you pay the price or run?

Kathie

Tell her that you figured they needed a good home and you'd still give them that but you weren't going to give her any money...... Tell her she should've brought that up at the beginning!

Run. I'd rather pay full price at the feed store than deal with someone like that.

I would Run, it's her fault for not bringing it up right off the bat.

If I was looking for a home for something, I say "I am looking for a good home for this...it is free, will you please take it" Or "I need to get rid of this, I'm looking for $X" So it's her fault, give them to you or no deal.

I hope she doesn't know where you live. Don't give her any hints about when you won't be home.

She does know where I live and I didn't tell her. She got my name from a local buy, sell, trade list, I posted a couple months ago that I was looking for some pullets. I don't know how she knows were I live. Based on where she said to meet, she lives close to a gal I know. She also could have been in my puppy class. I may "know" her and just not know her name.

Do think it is time to suggest that she take them to the sale barn and get a fair price for them

Kathie, be careful and don't give her a chance to get back at you for "wasting her time." She may be nuts. I like the sale barn idea, it could end up costing her money.

This really smells. If she knows you in real life, she would have brought that up right away. Don't get backed into that corner. Tell her you found some others, and explain to your rabbit adopters what happened.

Stay safe. Maybe add that your guard dogs won't get along with the rabbits.

Here is what I sent her:

"You know, you totally surprised me today when you said that we needed to talk about the price. I thought that I was doing you a favor by providing a good home for animals that you can't take when you moved. I had no idea that your intention was to sell them. I had made arrangements to give a rabbit trio to some friends and a couple rabbits to the neighbor girls. I really don't need to spend money to give stuff away.

Why don't you just run everything through the sale barn and then neither one of us will feel like they were backed into corner.

Thanks!"

Kathie

This "deal" has been getting hashed over for over a month??? Smells awfully fishy to me. I'd back off.

Why would you return an email from someone you don't know?

I've been buying and selling stuff in the flea market business for quite some time.

When selling stuff to buyers, people can be total flakes.

Run from that flake. She is doing nothing but wasting your time.

If, by chance, she shows up and wants to give you the animals for free, make her write you a receipt that she owned them, and is giving them to you for free.

I think you wrote her an honest, fair message. You treated her according to the Golden Rule. Please report back here what her response was! Somehow I get the feeling this person will not respond in kind!

I would not take them. If she tries to set up a meeting tell her you are busy cleaning your guns.

That's a good one Rick.

I agree with you. Sage advise on keeping the crazies away. This one sounds like a real nut job.
