Need silo roof

Anybody know where I can get a silo roof within a reasonable driving distance of NE Texas....say within a days drive? I contacted several metal shops about having one built, but since silos aren't used around here they have never made one. One guy told me to draw him some blueprints....uh...yeah right. I can't draw stick people...blueprints aren't happening.

I'm pretty flexible on size. Need something between 12 and 20. The size silo roof I can locate will determine the size of round earthbag house I will be building. I'm building a small guest house for us to stay in while we build the main house. That's what I need the silo roof for. Thanks!!

Why not use a grain bin roof instead? Practically the same thing and there should be lots of them in Texas.

That would be fine too. Just not any in this area. I'm hoping someone in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas or Louisiana will know where I can get one.

Have you thought about building a square house?? Not much blueprint work nessesary to put a roof on a little square building. You'll need a ceiling with insulation above it, or you'll get fried under a steel roof.

Many years ago the Mother Earth News did a series of articles on a low cost home that incorporated a built on site round(ish) roof that didn't look too hard. Perhaps this would help....Earth-Sheltered-Home-On-A-Dime

Blueprints----I came across a book in the library several years ago that gave detailed instructions for making and applying a tin roof on a Victorian style turret.

Probably needless to say but when I went to look at the book again I simply could not find which book the directions were in. Our library has a good selection of books so not an easy task looking through all on the building trades.

I wonder if shipping would be cheaper than getting one fabricated locally?

I have always thought I wanted an old silo to refurbish into a dwelling with an upper level built so that part of the roof opens for observatory like viewing.

.................Too get around the "Round" problem , I'd fabricate a Square cap for the Peak and another to rest on the bottom wall ! Use angle iron and then you can simply use metal , self tapping roofing screws and galvanized tin . Maybe even attach a roof turbine too drawout the hot air . That should be fairly simple too build ! , fordy
