will this really hurt a freezer???

Last year the freezer on my carport died. Husband said it was because I kept frozen big bottles of water in there for my rabbits to snuggle on on ou hot humid Alabama summer days....I only have seven mostly Angora rabbits now so then it was only seven bottles a day....usually kept about 20 in freezer and just replaced the seven I removed each day with seven that I'd just taken out of the rabbit cages...

This year it's already terribly hot here. I put two bottles in the inside fridge freezer (just the regular freezer abovethe fridge whee you make ice cubs and such) and two iin the "egg" regridge freezer on the carport. The same thing. Just an odinary refridge with a freezer on the top.

Husband say if I keep switching the bottles out each day (two bottles in each refridge's freezer ) that that will cause those refrige/freezers to burn up as well.

Is he correct? Or is this just another thing he says because he hates ALL my animals (goats, ducks, laying hens, etc.)????

Anybody with any knowledge on this????help!

Fan might be cheaper? Wouldn't have thought of icecubes for rabbits!

That might be a lot of use for a regular refridgerator. A deep freeze should kinda handle it tho?

I've heard keeping a freezer out in the cold is bad for them - don't run enough in winter. But - I'm in MN, not your climate.....

I do have fans on either side of the bunny barn but you have to be extra careful and not let the air blow directly onto the rabbits....rabbts like to snuggle with large plastic bottles that are filled with frozen water....it just helps keep them cooler...rabbits can stand a lot of cold as long as they're not in a direct draft but heat is awful on them.

anybody else???? thanks so far!

the manual on my freezer says to fill whatever space in the freezer that doesn't have food with frozen bottles of water. the fuller the freezer the less it has to run to keep the food frozen. and if the power goes off the frozen bottles of water keep things colder longer

I have ALWAYS heard that if you keep your freezer full that it does not have to work as hard, and frozen water was RECOMMENDED to fill up the holes on the shelves.

I realize that opening your freezer door a couple of times a day does make it work harder.

Personally, I think the 2 cancel each other out!!!!!!!!!!

So you don't think just opening the door to pop in or take out two to four bottles of frozen water a day and then opening it again to put in two to four bottles that need to be frozen---is enough to "wear out" or "burn up?" a freezer?????

my freezer gets opened dozens of times a day. and I freeze jugs of water to put in the dogs buckets to keep their water cold and to keep one or two in the cooler in the back of my truck to keep my drinks and lunch cold. been doing this for over 15 years and my freezer still runs like a new one

Nope.

For that matter, it is getting hot here too, and I have popsicles and ice cubes in the fridge, and the kids are on summer break. If ANYTHING burned a freezer by opining the door several times a day that would be it. And, I bet your husband takes ice CUBES out of the freezer for his own use! I know that mine does.

Then again, men do not always agree with their wives and he honestly might not accept this reasoning.

I really don't think that it is because you were pulling out bottles of water for the rabbits. I think that it is because the freezer is in your carport where it is much hotter. If it was in an air conditioned house it would not have to work as hard and would last longer. Is there any way you can move the freezer into the house? We have one in the freezer and it doesn't have to run as often there.

The other possibility is that the freezer had something wrong with it...bad coil or something. Check your warranty.

He's even saying that putting in and taking out a couple of frozen water bottles a day from the freezer on top of the refridge INSIDE the house is going to burn up that whole refridge...

If I am able to buy another freezer I plan to put it in the corner of my kitchen but we don't have central heat or air in our house but it would be cooler than the carport.

Anybody else???? Is the general consensus that doing these bottles for the bunnies won't hurt the freezer?????

thank you all so far!!!!

If I was a betting woman I'd say that the freezer died because it was kept in an area that's not climate controlled. It's hard on a freezer to be left in a hot area.

Why in the world would it hurt a freezer to keep ice in it?

He says it "burns up" a freezer because it has to run overtime to freeze the water in the bottles....

I think the freezer just died.

But, let's look at what you are doing.

You are using 7 'big bottles' of water a day. How big is big? Quart size? Gallon size? 1/2 gallon?

Takes a lot of energy to freeze water - change it from a liquid to a solid. Doesn't take much energy to cool water - but a lot to freeze it.

So, if your freezer is going to convert 4 or sogallons of water every day all summer, it will have to do more work. This is not frozen water stored in a freezer as some recommend - it is something that needs to be frozen every day.

That does take energy, and does take work by your freezer. So you are using it up a tad faster.

Myself, I don't think you are 'burning it up.' Just using it. Obviously, you are using it a little harder with the water freezing chore.

I'd think the outdoor location is harder on it. But in your house, it will be dumping all the heat from those water jugs into your house.... That wouldn't be cool either...

You have a tool - the freezer. You are using it. Tools wear out as you use them. The water freezing will wear it out a little quicker. Just how it is.

My opinion.

Every thing man made wears out at some time for various reasons
This being said if it made my wife happy to freeze 40 bottles of water a day for her critters and it only lasted two or three years so be it . If the wife is happy i am

The bottles I am freezing are 64 ounce Ocean Spray Cranberry-Apple Juice bottles. Those are just the right side and are flat kind of bottles so the rabbits can lay up against them easier....I have a lotof those bottles because that juice is one kind that I am not allergic too....

So they are not really big but no really small.

He is wrong.

What he is saying is that if you drive your car, it will break down. If you use your washer, it will break. If you use the toilet, it will back up.

I can think of some unkind responses, but I'll just suggest that you smile and say "Maybe we need to buy a more expensive better quality appliances, so they don't break down when used to do what they are designed to do?"
