Ad ware virus from HT?

Kmac 15 here, my computer is down due to an ad ware virus that showed up while I was on here yesterday. It wants me to buy a virus removal program.

No sure where it came from as I don't know what kind of lag time these things have. About the only places I go are here, facebook and food network.

Any ideas on how to get it off my computer without wiping the hard drive?

I think I had that virus a few weeks ago. "Security Tool"? I tried my backup disk, with no luck, becuse apparently, the virus is still there...you have to remove it before using the backup disk. My brother told me to get an antiviral program on a disk, and try running it. I couldn't get a program on a disk and had to replace the hard drive (which was cheaper than buying Norton on a disk), but if you can get a disk, try that. If that doesn't work, you may have to replace the hard drive too. Good luck!

I can't figure out the name, it makes itself look like a window program. It is now at the point that I can't even access the restart on my screen.

this page, about 1/4 the way down has a screenshot of the antivirus2010 window. The page tells you how to get rid of the program if thats the one you have.

If you aren't careful, it will crash the hard drive. It crashed mine when I tried to remove the program. I don't know where I picked it up but it did lots of damage.

It most likely came from just being connected to the net.
You dont have to go anywhere to get junk on your pc.

And sites that do have junk...facebook is one of the biggies for a lot of nasty junk!!!!! HT isnt.

You need a good firewall, not the freebe stuff and a good antivirus/antispyware program.

If you had security software on your pc you could easily remove it, if it had managed to slip on by.

You could try downloading a free trial of a reputable anti-virus program. You may be able to remove it that way.

I have Norton internet security 2010 and nothing has gotten by it and it is always blocking junk from trying to get on. It keeps a history so you can see all the attempts and the risk that was avoided.

They offer a free trial.

JFI That antivirus 2010 malware IS NOT Norton antivirus!!! Norton has a program with that name but it doesnt get on your pc unless you put it there and they do not infect PC's. Its a good program.
Just so people dont get confused between some malware and a real program because the names are the same.

I don't think it's from HT. I got it on both of my PCs earlier this year. I tried and tried to get it off but ended up having to wipe them both clean and start all over. It's a total pain.

I have Norton 360 and it got thru that, still after running recovery it looks like there are issues. This is the first site I log on in the am, so I'll see.

I picked it up earlier in the year but I did pretty much confirm that it came from Facebook. My computer person set up a stronger firewall system for me and so far I haven't been reinfected, though I'm very cautious now.

I just paid $129.99 yesterday at Staples for them to remove a fake "securitysoft" program [virus] from my computer. Didn't want to lose my stuff by wiping clean or doing a full sustem restore (which may not have gotten rid of it anyway)

malwarebytes (free program) will remove it

www.malwarebytes.org

No computer should be on the net without already having malwarebytes on it.

Occasionally with that particular piece of malware it will prevent the download. in that case you will need to download the Malwarebytes installation file (called mbam.exe) on another computer, change the name (right click and choose rename call it anything.exe) then load on the infected machine and open the renamed mbam file

I second the opinion to PAY FOR and install a reputable Anti virus program. I use Webroot antivirus. You would be surprised how much it blocks. You get what you pay for and the "Free" antivirus programs are no exception. Everyone I know that tried to use a free program eventually gets burned.

Good luck removing the adware, I know it can be done by using several free programs, google the name of the virus on a non infected computer for complete instructions on how to remove it. Geeks have forums too

I have found that Avast antivirus coupled with Ad-Aware spyware removal can be a very effective combination. Both programs are free, and have worked very well for me.

And, yes, Facebook is very bad for viruses and other nasties.

I'm on my DH's apple right now SIGH

My system is so shot we can't even wipe the hard drive, it won't let us access any of the programs.
We are using Norton and pay for monthly for an extra one that updates on line and it still got through.

We have a family member who is a comp tech coming home this weekend and he seems pretty sure he can fix it. We will have to wait and see.

I did get a post reply email from HT 3 days ago that my antivurus flagged so I deleted it. First time it ever happened on this site and I thought it was just a glitch.

I'm sorry to say it, but it has to be coming from HT. My computer blocked it just a little while ago, and this is the absolutely only place I've been since logging on tonight, and I never ever go to Facebook. Luckily my Trend Micro DID block it. Sorry it didn't work for you Jill. I don't know if it's because I have the Pro version or if my settings are just higher than yours.
