Smoke/fire damaged items

Dh's friend has given him a Oak roll top desk and a entertainment center that has handpainted Tole work on the doors. They were in their house fire they had couple months back. There is no damage, just the soot and Smell. Got any hints how to remove the soot and smell without hurting the finishes? I'm going to use the entertainment ct. for canning storage, so I can seal it on all sides, but the painting is real pretty and would like to save it. Thanks.

you should be able to just wipe off the soot with a rag and water. Then put the thing on a porch or covered area with lots of fresh air flow. The natural ozone in the atmosphere will get rid of the smell, or at least most of it. There is more ozone when it's stormy.

Thanks. Turns out it's an Amour, or whatever. I got the roll top done pretty well, and oiled her down with lemon oil. Boy this stuff is Heavy. I'll put apples inside, and leave the big cabnit outside. We are not supposed to have rain for a week. I'll also check on the Ozum. Feel bad for the folks, they just wanted it all gone.
