Ice maker

My ice maker has started making hollow ice cubes. Anyone know why this is happening? It is a magic chef refrigerator. Not sure what the ice maker is.

It sounds like it's dumping the ice before it's had time to freeze all the way through. Some have a sensor that tells it when the ice is ready to harvest, and some just dump every so often, and the ice maker is set up to let it go for the time frame needed to make the ice. Some have a screw that you can adjust to lengthen the time to allow it to freeze thoroughly.

It could also be that your freezer compartment isn't getting quite cold enough to freeze the ice all the way through. Check the other stuff in your freezer to make sure it's staying frozen like it should.

You also might check out www.repairclinic.com. They have a page where you can ask questions about your appliance, and someone will answer you, usually within 24 hours. You'll need the model and serial number off your refrigerator, which should be on a plate in the refrigerator compartment.

A quick test would be to shut off the dump feature for a couple of hours after the ice maker fills with water. Leave it for a good long time, dump the ice, and see if they are solid.

Another website I whole-heartedly recommend is the repair forum at appliancepartspros.com. LOTS of help, and the company that sponsors the forum sells parts. They've been great help in troubleshooting our overcooling problem with our Maytag fridge. I ordered the suggested part and opted for the lowest shipping charge, which was up to 5 days delivery. The part got here two days later and ship the same day if the order is received before a certain time.

I went to the refrigerator section of the site and did a forum search for hollow ice cubes, found several threads.
