IH 284 Tractor

There is an IH 284 tractor coming up at auction, with loader. I think it is a gas engine.

Anyone have any experience with this model and whether is can be a good tractor? What should one sell for, with a generic loader?

Small Japanese tractors with gas engines can be parts nightmare, but ok for what they are and usually much cheaper to buy used than same tractor with a diesel. Saying that, think I've seen a gas IHC 284 once and havent ever used one. Here is link to one discussion on yesterdaystractor.com for this tractor that might be useful: http://www.ytmag.com/farmall/messages/452575.html A search on their forums might find other useful discussions. Give you an idea of problems people have had with them.

The 284 is a poor excuse for an International and arguably the worst tractor they made. Its over all weight is to light to be a good loader tractor. Its severly under powered. The motor is made in japan i think and parts are a nightmare some parts you have to have custom made at a machine shop. not to mention that the motor at least from my experience is totally unrelliable. Id rather farm with my lawn tractor. as to its value ask the scrap guy!

sorry about my rant but I've had horrid experience with those tractors and 2 of my neighbors have one sitting in a fence row rusting i just hate to see some one else get sucked into one of these tractors if you doubt me go to yesterdays tractor.com and search the archives and see what the other tractor nuts say about them. any way if you need a loader tractor the 284 is one that in my opinion you should pass on.
