Making the Move Soon!

We are almost ready to achieve our dream of moving to a small farm in Maine. My wife and I are in our mid 50's. We will retire as soon as we can sell our house in MO and move to a 140 YO house and 6 acres we purchased last fall in Aroostook County Maine. We are both from the NE and have roots in ME so the winters will be nothing new. The house needs some work, but I am fairly handy and there is plenty of help in the community we are moving to.

We plan to raise as much of our food as we can on the property. There are 2 acres of cleared land and 4 acres of mixed cedar/birch. In addition to a garden, we are thinking about chickens, pigs, goats and perhaps a cow or two. I am anxious to get back into hunting and fishing after a 20 year hiatus. This could also potentially contribute to our subsistence.

In addition to my pension, I'm thinking I may do some substitute teaching to supplement (at least keep me in beer and ammo). Selling crafts and log furniture may also be a possibility.

Thanks for letting me share. We are both anxious to trade our 9 to 5s for 24/7 jobs!

Kevin

Congratulations!

Dh and I are also one step closer to our dream as of today (closed on our 40 acres). We will both have to stick it out a few years more in the rat race, but we're getting closer.
I wish you much happiness in your new home, and good luck. Hope your other house sells quickly so you can move on to your new life.

Congratulations!
Where is your house in MO?
I'm looking for a lease/option in Jefferson County.

Congratulations, and be prepared to have your new home be called by the former owners name for the next twenty or so years...."Don't you live in the old(insert former owner's name) place?"

Even I refer to the house as the "Oliver" place. House here is in St Peters, St Chas Cty.

good for you!! yeah, its more time consuming, but its more like something you choose to do for the sake of doing it, not just to pay the bills. and altho getting bills paid on time is a good thing, its not near as personally satisfying as what you're heading into.

with a paycheck, you can stop at the store and buy, oh, some chicken and broccoli. but its SO much more fun to look in the yard, or freezer and see what you did, start to finish, and ain't nothing like fresh food. that stuff you buy seems fine til you have the real stuff, then its like you've never had it before, night and day difference! even simple food like a carrot, ain't nothing like the real thing!!

Awesome! I'm so envious of you. Sounds like you've got a great plan and are ready to execute.

I can't wait for the day I can post such a terrific announcement! Best of luck to you.
