a followup to my Diabetes thread, got a monitor

ok well i got a letter to go to dr in June..duh..i called back and cancelled and asked for a fasting blood test

we went to Walmart and i decided to take all your great advice and buy not only a monitor and test strips but also the A1c test...

when I got home I set up the monitor and the A1c test and did both the test and checked my blood...it said 114

I don't know if that is good or bad? you guys know better than me.

When should I check, what range should i be in for NORMAL???

i have enough test strips (100) to get a good idea before June if i'm good or bad and the A1c test will be returned in 5 to 7 days..i'll have the results of that.

still don't know what numbers to look for so you guys are my guides..thanks..brenda

114... Depends on when your last meal was...

1 hour after you eat it should be under 130
2 hours after a meal, under 120

fasting, like when you wake up (before you have anything to eat) should be between 60 & 90.

I hope that helps!

probably more like 3 hours i think after I ate..but I'm not really sure..might have been a little longer..I'll check in the morning after not eating all night and then I'll check a couple times 2 hours after a meal and see how that goes.

i have enough strips to test for a while..100..so i guess i should get some kind of a read of how i'm doing from that

Your A1C should be below 7. 7 is too high but 6.5 or lower is about right but still high. The A1C is the average of the sugar in your blood over a 3 month period. The meter will get you started but the A1C is what the Dr will go buy. You should check your blood 4 times per day, morning before breakfast before lunch before super and at bedtime. If your sugar at bedtime is below 100 eat a snack so that you don't have too low blood sugar and you may slip into a coma. I can't go to sleep with a low blood sugar but can if it is above 100.

ronbre,
Please quit messing around--first, read this, then keep your appointment with the Doc. His is the only advice you should follow--not us amateurs... http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/typ...abetes/ds00585 There are several pages in the Mayo site.......bookmark it to your favorites.

HOT DOG I don't even get 114. Closest I got is 120. That is a good number in my lay opinion. by the way if you go to pricking your finger do it on the side as that is where the blood flow is. On the finger pad and it will get so sore.

Mine is usually between 75-95 in the mornings before I eat.
The above advice is good, see a doctor and see him/her regularly.
They may send you to a dietitian who can get you on the right path food wise.

I would also keep the appointment in June, but go in with a couple of weeks worth of daily glucometer readings and the A1C results. And still get them to do a fasting blood test.

You might also want to start a food diary. When I first started I would write down everything I had at a meal and then next to it write my 2 hr post prandial test result. This way if I had a higher than expected number, I could look at what I'd eaten and start weeding out the things that were problems.

6-7 is a good A1C in a diabetic. If you are not diabetic it should be under 6

114 is normal UNLESS it is first thing in the morning (before you eat).

So far, so good!

I find that if I am going to go too high it will PROBABLY be after breakfast, so, I usually eat a very light breakfast.

Do me a favor?

This weekend, get up in the middle of the night and stick your finger. Sometimes our bodies let our blood sugars drop TOO LOW, and then dump a lot of stored calories into our blood streams to compensate, which then brings the blood sugar too high by the morning. I suspect this happened to you.

Symptoms of a sleeping drop in blood sugar include waking up with a headache in the morning and having vivid dreams during the night.

The CURE is a high-protien snack at bedtime. Nuts are good, beef jerky is fine, cheese works well, and a peanut butter sandwich is also good. This works because fat and protien are digested very slowly, so it will keep your blood sugar steady all night long.

Diabetics' bodies simply do not keep the blood sugar well regulated: it CAN go too low as well! And, since you do not eat while you sleep, you CAN get too low and then have your body "fix" it, which results in it being too high.

140 is the high end of normal. It SHOULD be below 100 when you wake up because you are fasting. I really suspect you had trouble with low blood sugar while you slept as 109 is a very good bedtime reading.

I don't understand why anybody would try and regulate blood sugars without a doctor. That can be lethal!!

If you do it with meds AND no doctor it certainly can be!

Eating snacks and smaller meals, however, is pretty safe!

I get dawn phenomenon, too... I would go to sleep with a glucose of like 109 and wake up with one of 140...

I just make sure that I have a high protein snack right before I go to bed and, if I wake in the middle of the night (which I ALWAYS do) I have another tiny snack...

Since I have been doing that my numbers are right on.

Dutchie I'm not trying to do anything without a dr..the dr can't see me until the middle of June..and I'll see the dr then..I'm just tracking my blood sugar and food intake until then as they suggested..i went and bought a monitor cause i didn't have one..this is just day 2 since i got it

obviously they didn't think it was an emergency or they would have set up a quicker appointment then June !! don't come down on me, I'm doing the best I can with what i have available.

i took the A1c test so the results will be back before the dr appt..i'll reschedule the dr appt that i was going to cancel..or get a new one..but i will see the dr.

they just aren't avail until mid June ..so I'm not doing anything but trying to find out what is going on inside my body..so don't jump on me..OK?

and I do appreciate the advice from people that know something more than I do..I'll definately eat some protein before going to bed..I love nuts and can eat them with no problem, also the cheese and other stuff was a good idea..don't have the beef jerky but sure wish i did..yummo..I'll continue to keep track and report my findings TO THE DR when i see her

Jenni, that is interesting about the "dawn phenomenon", I had not know that.

I DID know about this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronic_Somogyi_rebound

Wikipedia is a poor source, but, this explains what my own doc told me to look out for.

Terri,

I thought that the rebound was only for people on insulin and DP was for those who were diet controled...

At least that is what my OB told me...

Take care! 8-)

I have never been on insulin and my doc told me to check for rebound.

Then again, I AM prone to low blood sugars, as my body regulates my blood sugars poorly.
