a tobacco barn for dismantling and removing

http://tinyhouseblog.com/

On the above site, there are showing a craigslisting for an old tobacco barn to take down. It's in Virginia.

I was reminded for Cabin Fever's floor - in his home, I think it was from an old barn that was dismantled, etc.

So I thought it might interest someone here, if it's not already taken.

Funny you mention that, we are in the process of dimantling and moving 2 barns. We are almost done reassembling the first one. It is a lot of work, for those of you that want to take on the project. You're dealing with 500lb plus logs, also pulling large amounts of nails and trying to keep 80 year old wood from splitting. But it is worth it when you consider how few of these barns will be around in 10 or 20 years because few people take the time to repair the tin roofs. They are the next 'collectors item'... I'll try to get some pics soon.... Around here you can get barns free for the asking. These 2 came from a farm that was subdivided and a new house will go in the location where the barns are, surrounded by the 100 year old oak trees. They will join the other buildings we have saved from local farms, including a 200 year old plantation kitchen, a smokehouse, and a slatted corncrib.

Several tobacco Barns Are sitting Empty, unused..........

In SE Indiana, Tobacco is not being grown, as much anymore. Many folks took the buy-out and got out of the business.
It is a labor intensive crop. And, like any crop, sensitive to the vagaries of the Weather and the Market.
The barns are simply used for storage now, if at all.

One big old hand hewn barn after another bites the dust around here. Mostly because the don't adapt well to houseing the large equipment used for todays farming. There is a crafter near here who will take off most of the usable shiplap siding, but the rest is most often knocked down and buried. It is costly to keep them in good repair, and people get tired of paying taxes on them when they aren't useing them.
I really hate to see them go.

When they tore down the old school here my friend salvaged the gym floor, for free, he just had to tear it up and move it. He finished all the floors in his house with it, and has enough left over for probably three more small houses. He had to scrape the varnish off the sides of each piece before he laided them back down, but after 60 years of coats of varnish every other year the floors are practically indistructable!!

He also salvaged a "Sears" kit home from the early 40's, it has four rooms and a bathroom, he turned it into a shop and guest quarters!
