ID help needed (pics)

Okay, in my garden today I had this.

It was between 6-8 inches long.

Who is it?

I live in SW Missouri. It has a different head than any of the skinks I have seen.
Also, it was much more 'chunky'.
I thought it was a salamander at first, but they dont have those toes. Anyone know?

Salamanders are amphibians and no scales.
Thats a lizzard. It may be in the family of skinks. There are many different kinds.

I dont know what kind of lizard it is for sure, but its sure pretty and it is happy to eat your bugs for you!

I figured it must be a lizard of some kind. Proud of myself for getting pics too.
I guess I need the skinks 101 website or something.
This one was MUCH bigger than my usual and many skinky dinks.

Nobody injured it, that's for sure.

bostonlesley, I am sure he will find a lady skink around here.
So, is this the male that goes with my other smaller, copper colored skinks?

Not a 5 lined one w/ the blue tail, for sure.

I am waiting for someone to link me to a rock-solid skink site, or sumpin.....

Yeah, I thought of that too. A lot of obviously erronious info on most of them too. Pictures of Eastern Fence Lizards, calling them skinks, etc.

I didn't pick this one up, which I normally do.
It was big and happy looking though.
I wish I *had* held it, I would know exactly how long it was.
Oh well. I have only lived in this eco-system for 6 years,
I have a LOT! more to learn.

It is marvelous!! how many different reptiles and amphibians
that live in the Ozarks.

Great pictures! I love lizards but we don't have them around here. He looks like he may have already found a lady the way he's all stretched out with three legs behind!

It can be frustrating, seeing all the trash folks post on the Internet as gospel.

Did you check out the link stickinthemud posted? Definitely your guy and it's from the Missouri Dept of Conservation, so they're reputable.

I have found the best sites for info are either University ones or State conservation departments. Missouri's conservation dept has an excellent website with really good pictures, I have used it to identify snakes even though I am in AR becuase it is better than ours. I have found if I can't find a picture of what I am looking for in my state it's good to look in the other local ones. I found one snake on the Kansas site and a couple on the Missouri one. We have a lot of snakes here which we like. Skinks too.

Yes, I looked at that MDC site. Thanks stickinthemud!
I have used that MDC for other things, rules/regs, etc. and I do get the Missouri Conservationist magazine (free! to MO residents, btw).I also have their pamphlets on IDing snakes and spiders. Those pamphlets alone have saved numerous snakes from death and settled a few arguments here too.

I wish I could get my hands on the posters they used to put out with all the reptiles in the whole state. I have been told they are no longer in print though.
