We did it! Bought 40 acres in the UP

I don't post very often (I lurk almost every day) and when I have, it's usually been questions about buying land. First we were looking in Kentucky, then we changed our minds and we've been searching in the UP for about 2 years.
Just had to share my excitment...we signed a contract on a 40 acre parcel just outside of Chatham, Michigan.
It will be several years until we can actually move there, but in the meantime, we have our little piece of God's Country for vacations, escape, and dreaming.
I'd appreciate prayers that nothing goes wrong with the closing (should be fine, but who knows, something could show up on the title search to cause a problem.)
Anyway, I'm bursting with excitement, and just have to tell everyone I know.
Martha

There's about a 10 acre hay field, a smaller field that has been used a food-plot for deer hunting, 20 acres of maples-not huge, but they are mature trees. there's also about 10 acres of cedar swamp that will not be of much use except as a buffer between us and the neighboring property on that side. We didn't explore the cedar too extensively, there may be some there worth cutting.. we may use for shingle siding for the buildings we build (someday, lol). I did see a small spring bubbling up from the ground.Electric at the road. About 2 miles from Chatham, and 18 miles to Munising. No buildings, a couple of junk trucks .
Oh, and lupines growing wild on the roadside!

I checked http://www.city-data.com/city/Chatham-Michigan.html and I see that there is no snow in June, July and August. Are you sure that this is okay?

Except in '92, when I lived in Houghton--I saw snowflakes at least once every month that year. Of course, that was a cold summer.

Congrats, weedlady, I am so jealous! Dh and I would love to move back up there.

In the nearby village of Ternary, famous for Ternary Toast, there is a shingle mill, owned by the owner of the feed mill. So when you are ready.....
MSU has an Ag Research Facility in Chatham.
"Lake Effect" snow that dumps snow by the feet shouldn't bother you that far south of Lake Superior.
Do expect night time temps to be chilly most of the time. Makes for good sleeping weather in the summer.
The black flies, aka no-seeums, are about to hatch. It has been fairly dry so the mosquitoes shouldn't be as bad this year.
Munising is the snowmobile capital of the UP. If you are into that, hope one of the many busy trails are nearby. If not, hope they are miles away.
Fence your garden and fruit trees.
